Venue features
The architecture of Ningbo Museum is the work of Mr. Wang Shu, a famous architect. The architecture itself is an "exhibit". Many people even come to see the architecture. A large number of old bricks and tiles from old buildings in Ningbo are used on the external wall of the museum. Some of the walls are inclined. If you look carefully, you can still find the symbols left on the bricks and tiles when they were fired.
The exterior of the museum is shaped as a fragment of a mountain. The exterior facade is made of tile wall and bamboo texture concrete in eastern Zhejiang. The main body has three floors and partial five floors. The main body has a centralized layout below the second floor. The buildings with more than two floors are cracked and slightly inclined, evolving into an abstract mountain, integrating Ningbo's regional cultural characteristics, traditional architectural elements and modern architectural forms and techniques.
From the south, the south facade is an absolute two-dimensional plane. In a valley fracture, an ultra wide ladder leads to the second "mountain" in the original place. People enter the museum through a flat, 30m span hole in the middle. The interior and exterior of the building are wrapped by bamboo formwork concrete and walls built with more than 20 kinds of recycled old bricks and tiles. The square outline limits other redundant meanings. The north section of the building is immersed in a manually excavated pool, overflows a stone dam at the entrance of the middle section, and ends in a large goose egg stone beach. In the upper part of the cracked building, there is an open platform. Through four different shapes of cracks, we can see the city and the rice fields and mountains in the distance.
On the inside, the whole structure includes three valleys with big steps, two inside and one outside; four caves are distributed in the entrance, the hall and the cliff side of the outdoor valley; four pit shaped courtyards, two in the center and two in the deep place. In the exhibition hall, a kind of mountain typology is superimposed on it. The public space is always multi-path. It starts from the ground and forks upward, forming a rhizome like labyrinth structure. The maze includes two kinds of routes: walking route and elevator and escalator route, which can adapt to almost all the pending streamline modes of museum visit.
Cultural relics protection
In May 2010, Ningbo Museum started the construction of data and information of precious cultural relics above level 3. By mid August, 1313 pieces of precious cultural relics were recorded in the database, including 49 pieces of first-class cultural relics, 101 pieces of second-class cultural relics, 1162 pieces of third-class cultural relics, and more than 8000 photos were taken and recorded.
Cultural relic value
Ningbo Museum's numerous bamboo carvings with signature and absolute chronological recognition are the important material basis for us to determine the age of bamboo carvings and identify the authenticity. Some bamboo carvings have been collected by famous artists of all dynasties. They are not only spread orderly, but also included in relevant bamboo carvings monographs. Many famous bamboo carving works with absolute chronological knowledge can help us to sort out, analyze and study the specific activities of various famous artists, their bamboo carving art techniques and style characteristics, as well as their formation and evolution, and study their personal styles and the times' styles that affect the development of bamboo carving art in various periods
The collection of bamboo carvings of famous artists has become an important example of interpreting relevant literature and showing the artistic style of bamboo carvers. It includes some bamboo carvings of famous calligraphers and painters that have not been confirmed before and some bamboo carvings of famous artists whose names have not been recorded. It plays an important role in supplementing history, supporting history and proving history
