Beidaihe is the second largest villa area after Lushan in China. By 1949, a total of 719 villas for Chinese and foreign people had been built in Beidaihe, with 140 existing. Most of these buildings are characterized by red roofs, plain walls and large cloisters, which gather various architectural forms in Europe and America. Most of them are distributed in various sanatoriums, and the distribution is not concentrated, so it is difficult for ordinary people to find the whole. I suggest you go to the following sanatoriums: Beijing Workers sanatorium (with Villa Wufeng building), sanatorium of the Ministry of water resources (Miss Switzerland building, etc.), Dongjing Road Hotel (with 5 or 6 buildings), Hebei veteran cadre sanatorium (with 5 or 6 buildings).
Beidaihe District government believes that these villas are an important part of Beidaihe style, with high historical and artistic value. In August this year, the local planning Department invited experts and scholars to give suggestions for the protection of these villas, and 66 of them were designated as key cultural relics protection units in the district.
In 1898, the Qing government announced that Beidaihe seashore would be a summer resort for "allowing Chinese and foreign people to live together". Chinese and foreign celebrities, rich businessmen and missionaries came to buy land, build houses and build villas.
China's first tourism poster, which was born in the early 20th century, depicts a woman with an umbrella and a swimsuit on the beach of Beidaihe. In the 1930s, Professor Chen juanzhe, a talented woman from Peking University, commented: "on the characteristics of Beidaihe, one is westernization, the other is fashion." In addition to Kang Youwei, Xu Shichang, Zhang Xueliang, Gu Weijun, Zhou Xuexi and other influential figures in modern history, as well as Mao Zedong and other leaders' activities and literary creation in Beidaihe after the founding of new China, Beidaihe has been endowed with a strong humanistic color of integration of China and the West.
