Zhongnan University of finance, economics and law is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China, with economics, law and management as the backbone, and nine disciplines including philosophy, literature, history, science, engineering and art. Zhongyuan University period (1948-1953)

In 1948, the Central Plains Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, with Deng Xiaoping as the first secretary, resolutely decided to establish a university in the Central Plains area and named it Zhongyuan University in order to build and consolidate the expanding liberated area of the Central Plains and cultivate professionals and cadres in all fields.

On July 10, 1948, the Preparatory Committee of Zhongyuan University was established, and Chen Yi served as the director of the Preparatory Committee. On August 2, commander Liu Bocheng announced the formal establishment of Zhongyuan University at the "August 1" memorial meeting held by Zhongyuan military region. In October, the first leading group of Zhongyuan University was formally established, with Fan Wenlan as president, pan Zinian as vice president and Meng Futang as Dean.

In 1949, Zhongyuan University moved to Wuhan, and its main departments became the predecessor of Zhongnan University of economics and law and the main foundation of Huazhong Normal University. Hubei University and Hubei College of Finance and Economics (1958-1978)

In July 1958, the Ministry of education and the Ministry of justice transferred Zhongnan University of Finance and economics, Zhongnan University of political science and law, and Zhongnan Cadre School of political science and law to Hubei Province. Hubei Province merged Zhongnan University of Finance and economics, Zhongnan University of political science and law, Zhongnan Cadre School of political science and law, and the law department of Wuhan University to form Hubei University At that time, it became one of the two universities named "University" in Hubei Province (the other was Wuhan University).

In February 2000, the State Council approved the plan of the Ministry of education. In May 2012, the University was selected into all three training bases of the first batch of "excellent legal talents education and training plan" in China. In July, the "Collaborative Innovation Center for knowledge economy and legal development" jointly built by Zhongnan University of economics and law, China University of political science and law and Peking University was inaugurated. On September 21, 2017, Zhongnan University of economics and law was selected as one of the first batch of "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities in China.
