Yanping theater is located in Gulangyu market building (now No. 6 Market Road). The commercial, cultural and entertainment complex was built on Gulangyu by the overseas Chinese Wang Ziru and Wang Qihua brothers living in Myanmar. It is located on the market road between the original settlement in yanzijiao area and the Longtou Road commercial block developed in 1920s. Wang Ziru and Wang Qihua learned from the business experience of Penang (today's Penang, Malaysia) vegetable market. From 1928 to 1931, they signed a contract with the Ministry of industry. First, they purchased land at No. 15, today's Haitan Road, and created a vegetable market with more than 20 shops and dozens of stalls, named "Gulangyu market". The market was the most modern vegetable market in Southern Fujian at that time, with spacious space, floor height meeting ventilation requirements, complete water supply and drainage facilities, stalls set up according to commodity types, and meat and vegetables sold in dry and wet areas. Later, they built a theater and cinema on the upper floor of the Gulangyu market, named "Yanping theater". The whole building covers an area of more than 2700 square meters, with a total of three floors. Downstairs is a large area of market. At the top of the entrance is a wavy mountain flower with the words "Gulangyu market" and flowers on it. There are large outdoor steps on the left and right sides of the entrance leading to the theater on the second floor. There are about 600 seats in the theater, including upper and lower floors. Inside are places for acting, movies and storytelling. It was renamed "Gulangyu theater", "Gulangyu theater" and "Gulangyu cinema".
