Characteristics of the park
Since its establishment in August 2001, the botanical garden has completed the construction of 367 hectares of Cypripedium on-the-spot protection fence, irrigation system and other infrastructure. The vegetation destroyed in the past has been gradually restored, and the number of rare birds living in the forest in the garden is increasing. The special insects that coexist with Cypripedium and other plants have been protected. The park also actively introduced a variety of rare plants, only Cypripedium species increased to 6.
In order to give full play to the advantages of regional biological resources, do a good job in ex situ protection, and build a treasure house for the introduction, collection and preservation of Alpine flowers, alpine plants and rare and endangered endemic plants, the alpine botanical garden has carried out large-scale wild plant census, seedling breeding and accumulation while continuously improving various infrastructure, and has collected wild Primula, Artemisia ordica, Acer truncatum, Acer truncatum, etc Iris has been successfully cultivated in huangmudan and other precious varieties, and pineapple with light leaf introduced from Belgium can also be seen in the park.
Gene pool of earth species
The small area in Northwest Yunnan where the Qinghai Tibet Plateau connects with Hengduan Mountains is rich in biological resources. Scientists were surprised to find traces of plant distribution from subtropical zone to cold temperate zone. They called this area "the base camp of ornamental and horticultural plants". This is one of the regions with clear climatic characteristics and complete biological spectrum in China. There are abundant and unique alpine and subalpine plants, almost all kinds of Eurasian alpine plants, and more complex Chinese Himalayan elements.
For a long time, Hengduan Mountain Area in Northwest Yunnan, especially Diqing, has been the area where scientific workers of Botany, horticulture, pharmacology, phytochemistry, plant cytology and other disciplines at home and abroad carry out scientific investigation, seedling and specimen collection, phytochemistry and pharmacology sample collection, cytology material collection and other activities most frequently. In the last century, many Chinese and foreign scientists have carried out a large number of plant investigation and collection.
Although there are many snow peaks in Diqing Prefecture, there are many forests and rivers under the snow line, so the ecological preservation is very complete. The altitude of the area is from 6740 meters to 1600 meters, and the three-dimensional climate features are prominent. The low latitude area where the region is located has strong solar radiation and abundant rainfall. The unique topography creates a unique plant band spectrum, and the degree of plant species is very high.
According to the survey, there are 330 species of Pteridophytes in the area, and there are more than 4600 species of seed plants belonging to 187 families, 1003 genera. A large number of species of "animal and plant kingdom" grow and multiply here, forming a rare species gene pool on the earth. In fact, in the Zhongdian plateau of Diqing Prefecture, an alpine botanical garden integrating scientific research, production, education, sightseeing, science popularization and academic exchange is established, which has unique natural conditions.
Endangered species sanctuary
Some living things in the world are rapidly degenerating and disappearing because they can't adapt to the changes of environment and other factors. The establishment of Shangri La Alpine botanical garden will aim at biodiversity protection and environmental construction in Hengduan Mountain area, focus on the rational development of regional biological resources and tourism resources, build a biodiversity conservation center with the main contents of introduction, collection, preservation and research of Alpine flowers, alpine medicinal plants, rare, endangered and endemic plants in China, and build China's first real Alpine botanical garden In a sense, the alpine rare botanical garden.
Fang Zhendong, deputy general manager of Yunnan gesanghuahui Co., Ltd., director of the Preparatory Office of Shangri La Alpine botanical garden and biological research expert, said that it is the greatest wish of generations of Chinese plant science workers to establish a park to display alpine and subalpine plants in the hinterland of Hengduan Mountain Area in Northwest Yunnan. Botanical experts from some famous botanical research institutions in the world, such as Edinburgh Royal Botanical Garden, Nepal International Mountain Research Center and so on, agreed that the suburb of Zhongdian city is the first choice for the establishment of botanical garden after their investigation, and repeatedly put forward suggestions to the local government and plant scientists to establish the garden as soon as possible. Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Yunnan Environmental Protection Bureau attached great importance to the establishment of Shangri La Alpine botanical garden. The State Forestry Administration also expressed support.
In late 2000, led by Yunnan gesanghuahui company, with the participation and support of experts from Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yunnan University, Shenzhen Xianhu botanical garden and Australian National Botanical Garden, the selection of botanical garden was completed, and preliminary plant background investigation and vegetation distribution survey were carried out. The botanical garden is located in nidamu mountain, 8 kilometers south of Zhongdian City, with an altitude of 3000 meters to 4200 meters and a total area of 2200 hectares. In addition, a large area of the original land where many kinds of wild rare and precious Cymbidium coexist has also started to operate as an important base for the protection and construction of the sub garden. By the beginning of May 2001, the construction of Shangri La Alpine botanical garden had been fully started.
Wild plant domestication Garden
The establishment of Shangri La Alpine botanical garden has introduced a new market concept. In addition to the traditional concept of scientific research and popularization, it also takes the domestication of wild plants as an important topic, which adds a richer connotation to the construction of a strong green economy province in Yunnan. According to reports, in the next year and a half, Shangri La Alpine botanical garden will build a production area with an annual output of 100000 seedlings and 40000 pots of potted flowers, and build an open alpine botanical garden, attracting 50% to 70% of local tourists to visit the garden every year, and 1000 to 2000 domestic and foreign scientists to carry out scientific research projects and academic exchanges.
The botanical garden will be planned and constructed according to the original grassland and traditional grazing reserve, plant genetic resources conservation area, canyon and forest scenery corridor, scientific research and production activity area, public education and academic exchange activity area, business activity area and other functional areas.
Development prospects
Fang Zhendong, the founder of the botanical garden, said that Shangri La Alpine botanical garden has established extensive contacts with some well-known botanical gardens at home and abroad, such as Missouri Botanical Garden in the United States, Australian National Botanical Garden, middle and northwest botanical garden of the Russian National Academy of Sciences, Edinburgh Royal Botanical Garden in the United Kingdom, adfen botanical garden, plant research institutions, garden departments, horticultural associations, etc The same level of cooperation. It is believed that Shangri La Alpine botanical garden will play its due role in the near future.
