Two thousand and five hundred years ago, the disciples of Sakyamuni's nirvana obtained a parietal bone, two scapulae, four teeth, a middle finger relic and 84000 pearl relic from the ashes when they cremated his body. These relics of the Buddha are regarded as sacred objects by believers, and they vie to offer them.

Also placed in Tianmenshan temple are the two relics of muqianlian, the two disciples of Sakyamuni, and the relic Buddha. They were built in Tianmenshan temple in the Tang Dynasty. In 2002, the local government spent more than 80 million yuan to rebuild the ancient temple. The reconstructed Tianmenshan temple covers an area of more than 20000 square meters, which is the highest Buddhist building complex in Hunan Province. It is the first official Temple overseas in the history of China. There are only two Sakyamuni Buddhist relics in Zhonghua temple, both of which were given by the elder Zhangbi menglananta in front of the Lotus Temple in Lumbini, Nepal. With deep feelings for Hunan, monk Huaishan, the abbot of Zhonghua temple, who was a monk in Hengshan Mountain of Nanyue in the 1980s, presented one of the two Buddhist relics to Tianmenshan temple. On the day of placing, it rained cats and dogs in Zhangjiajie, and tens of thousands of Chinese and foreign tourists and Buddhist believers witnessed this solemn moment.
