Conference history
After the Zunyi Meeting, the Central Red Army (the first front army of the Red Army) left Zunyi from January 18 to 19, 1935, crossed the Chishui River on January 29, and entered the Xuyong and Guzhuo areas in southern Sichuan on January 2, preparing to cross the Changjiang River north. At this time, Chiang Kai Shek dispatched the central army and the Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou local armies to defend the Yangtze River and prepare to gather and annihilate the Red Army. In the light of the changes in the situation, the Central Red Army decided to avoid the enemy's edge, postpone the reform, and gather in Zhaxi, Yunnan, where the KMT had no power, for a short rest, in search of a new strategic maneuver.
On February 6, 1935, the Central Red Army entered the Zhaxi area and held a meeting at dahetan, not far from Zhaxi Town, which was the beginning of the Zhaxi meeting.
On February 8, 1935, the Central Military Commission was stationed in Zhaxi Town, and the conference continued to be held in the theater of Jiangxi guild hall. "Attending the meeting were Chairman Mao Zedong, vice chairman Zhou Enlai, commander-in-chief Zhu De, General Secretary Zhang Wentian and other central responsible comrades, as well as a number of Central Committee members, several League members and leaders of central organs such as Dong Biwu, Xu Teli, Lin Boqu, Xie Jueya and Mao Zemin. On February 8, the meeting adopted the outline of the resolution of the enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on summing up the experience and lessons of smashing the five "encirclement and suppression" wars, which formalized the resolution of the Zunyi Meeting. On February 10, in the name of the Central Military Commission, the order on the downsizing of the legions was issued. So far, the Tashi meeting ended. The Zhaxi meeting is another enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau held by the CPC Central Committee only 26 days after the Zunyi Meeting, which is the continuation and supplement of the Zunyi Meeting. The meeting discussed and decided on several major issues concerning the overall situation, analyzed the new changes in the military situation faced at that time, and determined the new guidelines for the action of the Central Red Army. This meeting is of great significance for the Red Army to extricate itself from difficulties, strive for initiative and complete strategic transfer.
According to the spirit of the Zhaxi meeting, the Central Red Army reorganized in Zhaxi, simplified its organs and enriched its company, so as to enhance its mobility and combat capability. During its stay in Zhaxi, the Red Army actively publicized the ideas of the Communist Party of China, anti Japanese and national salvation, and carried out the work of fighting local tyrants and dividing fields, so that the local people could understand and support the Red Army. After the reorganization of Zhaxi, the Red Army expanded more than 3000 people, and its military power was greatly boosted. So it went back to the East, crossed Chishui for the second time, conquered Zunyi again on February 27, annihilated 20 regiments of the Kuomintang army, and won the first great victory since the Long March, laying the foundation for realizing the strategic goal of going north to resist Japan.
