On the eve of the national government's escape from Taiwan, Chen Cheng, the then provincial president, personally explored and selected the so-called "presidential residence". The official residence started construction in 1949 and was completed in early 1950. After Chiang Kai Shek came to Taiwan, he first lived in Caoshan mansion (Yangmingshan). In May 1950, after the completion of Shilin official residence, Chiang Kai Shek officially moved to Shilin official residence until he died of illness in 1975. He spent 26 years in the official residence. Therefore, this is Chiang Kai Shek's most representative former residence, where he once received dignitaries from various countries. As Chiang Kai Shek lived here, the official residence of the Imperial Academy, the horticultural management office and the surrounding areas had long been included in the military control zone of Dazhi fortress by Taiwan's Defense Department, and all kinds of new construction or reconstruction were strictly prohibited. The main hall of the official residence is made of cement on the second floor, with partial tile roof. There is a cafe at the exit of the official residence. Many people are sitting in the open-air bar at the entrance of the cafe to have a rest and chat. The museum has long been managed and maintained by the office of the leader of the Taiwan region. In 2006, it set aside NT $116 million for restoration. By 2009, the restoration was completed. It took another year to repair and maintain carpet furniture and hand over cultural relics. It was opened to the outside world in January 2011.

Walking into the main entrance of the hall, you will see a large dragon and Phoenix root carving porch. There are four copies of Song Meiling's own Chinese paintings on the wall of the hall. The furniture of tables and chairs is a combination of Chinese and Western styles, and the floor is covered with dark red carpet.

After Song Meiling came to Taiwan, she fell in love with Chinese painting. Thanks to the masters of Chinese painting, such as Huang Junbi and Zhang Daqian, she painted orchids, bamboos and landscapes, almost forgetting to eat and sleep. Shao Minghuang, the director of the KMT Party History Museum, who was in charge of the tour, told an interesting story: outside, she suspected that someone had been writing for Song Meiling's painting. So Song Meiling chose the birthday of Confucius and invited famous Chinese painters to have a dinner. After the dinner, she showed her painting skills on the spot, and no one doubted any more.

After the hall is a small living room. Above the fireplace is an oil painting portrait of Chiang Kai Shek's mother Wang Caiyu. Shao Minghuang said that Chiang Kai Shek often played checkers and go with his children and grandchildren here to enjoy his family's happiness. Later, Song Meiling loved to play chess. She often invited her relatives and friends to play chess. When she played chess, she was in a good mood and sang songs. The small living room also serves as a movie room.
