Synopsis
Old lady Ethel and her husband Norman left the noisy city life and went to the old house where they used to live, a wooden house by the pond, to start their life again. Nearly seventy year old Ethel is full of enthusiasm for life, while seventy-nine year old Norman is on the contrary, depressed and eccentric. The beautiful scenery by the golden pond and his wife's meticulous care did not help old Norman get rid of the fear of aging. Norman's heart trouble filled him with fear of death. It coincides with the 80th birthday of the old man. In order to celebrate his father's birthday, her daughter, Ceci, who is estranged from her father, brings her husband and 13-year-old son to the golden pond.
But the lively surface still can't hide the emotional crisis among the three generations. After many years, there is still no sign of reconciliation between father and daughter. Norman's harsh language also caused the difficult communication and estrangement between him and his guests and daughter. What's more, the daughter and her husband entrusted the old couple to take care of 13-year-old Billy because they wanted to travel to Europe. This is a test for three generations. Life goes on after my daughter leaves. From mutual distrust to mutual understanding, they often go boating, fishing and diving together. Sun Tzu finally found the happiness and laughter that he had not seen for a long time, and the old man also realized the happiness of family from his children.
Due to an unexpected fall into the water, the stubborn Norman starts to look at his life again, and his daughter, Ceci, comes to the golden pond again. Ethel firmly sees the conflicts between her husband Norman and her daughter Cecil. She patiently observes and listens to everything like a psychologist. Ethel knows that all her husband's actions are due to the fear of getting old. Ethel and Cecil analyze the real reasons behind her daughter's dislike of fighting together to help Cecil recognize her real psychological needs. By helping her grandson Billy and Norman achieve a harmonious relationship, Ethel shows her daughter the hope of reconciliation with her father. She encourages her daughter to take practical actions to cooperate with her father and Norman Good.
After a deep talk, father and daughter finally solved the long-standing problem in their heart. The father talked with his daughter in the tone of appreciation and approval, and the daughter also communicated with his father in a positive attitude of understanding. After the daughter overcame the physical and psychological obstacles and completed the unsuccessful back somersault diving, the Father also personally wore the medal he won in school for his daughter, and the father and daughter hugged each other

Movie highlights
Before filming, Katherine Hepburn injured her arm in a tennis match and decided to quit the film, but Henry tried to persuade her. There is a scene where Katherine Hepburn drags a canoe with pain in her arm, but this part is omitted from the film.
All the special effects of Katherine Hepburn in the golden pond are done by herself.
While filming Norman and Billy clinging to the rocks for survival, Henry Fonda and Doug McKeen had to wear diving suits because of the extremely low temperature of the lake.
Katherine Hepburn refused to put on her diving suit to ensure the real effect when shooting the scene of Ethel jumping into the water.
Norman and Billy have repeatedly photographed the scene of the ship crashing into the rock. This is because the wooden yacht used by the crew is so strong that the crew must modify it to achieve the effect of the ship's disintegration in the collision.
Go through the lens
When the ship hit the rock, a baffle could be seen sliding down, and the hole in the ship was revealed.
When Ethel and Norman were watching the divers on the ship, there were some luring fake birds in the place where the divers were found, and the shapes of these fake birds were not correct.
As Billy Ray circled the boat in the lake, he could see part of the shadow of the camera.
