Former site of the US consulate in Hankou
The former site of the US consulate in Hankou, No. 1, Chezhan Road, Jiang'an District, Wuhan
Built in 1905, it is a cultural relic protection unit in Hubei Province
In April 1861, the second month after Hankou was used as a foreign trade port, the United States set up a consulate in Wuhan. At the beginning of its opening, the museum was located in Hanyang. In 1905, with the completion of the red baroque style consulate building, the US consulate moved to Hankou.
The main building of this 108 year old house is a three storey brick structure. The main facade of the house is made up of three buildings with different heights. There are three entrances. The largest arched door in the middle is the main entrance. The entrance is the public hall with extremely high internal space. The three-story exterior walls are all fair faced red brick, continuous semicircular arch windows and doors, and each floor has a significant waistline.
What is impressive is that the facade is curved, forming a cohesive momentum, undulating and stretching, which is very fluid. The four story octagonal tower at the corner of two streets is like a medieval castle in Europe. From bottom to top, the whole building is lighter and lighter. The interior decoration of the building is luxurious, with terrazzo in the corridor and wood floor in the room. It is still well preserved.
In December 1941, the Pacific War broke out and the consulate was closed until it was restored after the victory of the Anti Japanese war in 1945. Wuhan was liberated in May 1949, and the consulate was closed again. In 2008, the U.S. consulate in Wuhan opened again, but the site is no longer here, which is now the talent market in Wuhan.
