Meeting site
The Fringe Club is a historic building located in the most prosperous central district of Hong Kong. Built in the late 19th century, this three story brick building is one of the few that can be preserved today. When the building was built, it was designed for a variety of purposes, including industrial, commercial and residential. Therefore, the building is very unique. It not only reflects its original goal of multi-functional use, but also radiates the nostalgic color of the colonial era.
When the Fringe Club took over the building in 1984, the building was in disrepair, dilapidated and leaking for a long time. Xie Junxing, founder of the Fringe Club, and a group of enthusiastic volunteers and decorators worked together to reorganize the icehouse that had been abandoned for more than 10 years in just four weeks and transform it into today's Fringe Club. At first, the Fringe Club operated for five years without a fixed lease. Later, it signed a contract with the government. After years of maintenance at different stages, the building will be well preserved and take on a new look. In addition to making it escape the axe chisel of developers, it also gives it new life. Today, the Fringe Club has been recognized as a vibrant contemporary art space in Hong Kong and even in the Asia Pacific region. It has become a successful example of valuable reuse of abandoned buildings and revitalization of decadent communities.
Building history
The warehouse of the old milk company, which was built in 1892, was originally an ice cellar. The area of the old warehouse is only half of the current one (South Block). In 1896, the milk company moved its headquarters to the main warehouse, and then successively joined the slaughterhouse, pie production workshop, milk distribution center, retail ice snow warehouse, non-staple food workshop and boiler room. In 1913, the company renovated the warehouse into the residence of the general manager. During the period of Japanese occupation (1941-1945), the warehouse was once plundered by the Japanese army. It was still the headquarters of the milk company until the 1970s. In 1982, the Hong Kong foreign press conference entered the old North block. Two years later, the government also leased the south block to the Fringe Club.
