Chaoyang bird fossil World Geopark is located in Chaoyang City, western Liaoning Province. Chaoyang is located in the throat of China's Rooster territory, where Liaoning, Hebei and Mongolia provinces meet.

Chaoyang is a famous historical and cultural city with a history of more than 1700 years. There are abundant tourism resources, such as Chaoyang bird fossil National Geopark, pigeonhole ancient human site, Niuheliang Hongshan cultural site and so on. Chaoyang is "China's excellent tourist city", with brilliant Hongshan culture. It is known as "the place where the first flower blooms and the first bird flies" in the world, and also has the title of "Oriental Buddha capital".

The park is located at No. 100 longniao street, Longcheng District, Chaoyang City, covering an area of 900 mu. The main geological remains are paleontological fossils, fossil bearing strata and geological structures. The Geopark is composed of shangheshou paleontological fossil Park, Sihetun paleontological fossil Park, Lingyuan Dazhangzi Park (which are the main producing areas of famous "Rehe biota" fossils), AAAA grade Fenghuangshan Park and huaishudong scenic spot.

Development history

In August 1998, with the approval of the State Council, a national bird fossil nature reserve with an area of 46.3 square kilometers was established in Beipiao City, where fossils of paleontology were discovered earlier and there are a large number of species. In order to strengthen the management of fossil resources in Chaoyang.

In April 2002, according to the spirit of the documents compiled by the Municipal Office of land and resources, we formally established Chaoyang paleontological and fossil resources management office, which is a branch level institution under the Municipal Bureau of land and resources, and is mainly responsible for the management of paleontological and fossil resources within the jurisdiction of the city.

In July 2002, with the approval of the municipal government, Chaoyang paleontological fossil group nature reserve was established, covering an area of 10128 square kilometers.

In 2011, the municipal Party committee and provincial government decided to change Chaoyang paleontological fossil resources management office into Chaoyang bird fossil National Geopark Administration Bureau in Liaoning Province, which is a public institution directly under the municipal government.

On December 7, 2015, Chaoyang bird fossil National Geopark declared as a World Geopark.

In October 2018, it was rated as the national research and practice education base for primary and secondary school students.

Chinese Dinosaur Fossils

The skeletal structure is typical of dinosaurs. Miraculously, there is a series of "hair" like epidermal derivatives on the back of the body, covering from the head to the tip of the tail. The discovery of long feathered dinosaur fossils, represented by Sinosauropteryx sinensis, has opened a new climax in the study of Jehol biota. Thus, the research on the origin of birds from dinosaurs, a hot topic in the field of biological evolution, has been activated. Since then, dozens of long feathered dinosaur fossils have been discovered, including primitive ancestor bird, tailed bird, Beipiaosaurus, ornithosaurus sinicus, Microraptor and pelosaurus covered with feathers.

World class treasure house of paleontological fossils

Up to now, abundant fossil fossils have been found in more than 10000 square kilometers of Chaoyang City. According to incomplete statistics, more than 20 paleontological phyla and thousands of species have been found in the Jehol biota, including insects, bivalves, gastropods, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals in the animal kingdom, and cuneifolia, true ferns, cycads, gingko, conifers and angiosperms in the plant kingdom. These numerous remains of ancient creatures are unique in the world for their abundant quantity, exquisite preservation and great research value. They not only faithfully record a very important stage in the evolution history of life on the earth, but also tell people the changes from 150 million to 100 million years ago.

The results show that the Jehol Biota covers at least three important scientific issues: the origin and evolution of birds, mammals and angiosperms. Through the long-term and arduous efforts of paleontologists, the mystery of these problems is slowly being revealed.

Main attractions

The geological corridor viewing platform is one of the landmark buildings in the park. It is the largest geological section in the world. Its shape is based on the shape design of Lingyuan Qianlong, a representative fossil unearthed in Chaoyang. The core part of the geological corridor, stratigraphic section, shows a primitive fossil excavation. The whole stratigraphic section is 130 meters long along the strike of the strata, and the deepest part is 14 meters. The 1400 M2 one-sided huge stratigraphic section tells you about the vicissitudes of the world. In it, the truly exquisite paleontological fossils enable you to explore the information and mystery of ancient life in a short distance. You can say that you are standing on the fossils to appreciate the fossils.

The Museum covers an area of 12300 square meters and has three floors. It has six exhibition halls: Popular Science Earth hall, dinosaur Empire hall, wood fossil hall, Jehol Biota hall, ancient plant fossil hall and high-quality human fossil hall. Among them, the most famous "Liaoning ancient fruit" and "Chinese Dragon Bird" are collected here. Here, you can also experience the instantaneous changes of earthquakes and watch the eruption process of simulated volcanoes.

The woody stone forest covers an area of 50000 square meters, with more than 1200 woody fossils. It is the world's first migratory woody stone forest. The forest corridor, pavilion landscape and rest area are all available. Visitors can intuitively understand the origin, classification and appreciation of wood fossils. Winter snow and summer flowers, four seasons change, deduce different charm; wood stone forest, carrying history, waiting for your near steps.

The Triassic water system is composed of three parts: Dragon spitting slurry, winding path leading to seclusion, and three layers of water. The spring from Longkou forms a thin trickle in the rockery of the Triassic water system, which flows in turn to the three pools that seem to be constructed at will but are designed with ingenuity. Thus, the wonderful view of three layers of water emerges.

At the end of 1990s, when the villagers of shangheshou took soil here, they found an exquisite stone slab that looks like a pigeon. This is the famous bird fossil. At the beginning of 2000, a large number of precious fossil fossils were excavated here. This exhibition hall was built on the basis of sorting out the site of the original excavation site, and reproduces the excavation of that year with pictures and physical specimens. In the process of section arrangement, many fossils were accidentally unearthed, which fully proves that the fossil resources here are very rich.
