Tong Dizhou's former residence is the dormitory area of professors of national Shandong University in 1930s and 1940s. At that time, Tong Dizhou lived in the east of Building 1. The former residence is a two-story Japanese style building with several Chinese toon trees planted in front of the door. Tong Dizhou has lived here for 11 years. Tong Dizhou's former residence is located in Tong Village, Tangxi Town, Yinzhou District. It is a three in seven Bay courtyard brick and wood structure building.
The existing houses were built in the late Qing Dynasty, facing south. The front row is flat house, the East and west sides are kitchen, and the second floor building in the back row is the place where Mr. Tong Dizhou was born, lived and studied. Now there are more than 10 pieces of Qing style furniture, such as bed, desk, writing desk, wardrobe, chair, etc., which are well preserved. It is a typical residential building of courtyard style in the late Qing Dynasty. Since its inception, the house has not been reconstructed or repaired on a large scale, and its overall structure is still full of antique flavor.

In September 1934, Tong Dizhou obtained his doctorate from Brussels University, and later became a professor in Biology Department of Shandong University in Qingdao. After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, he left Qingdao and successively taught in Central University and Fudan University. After Shandong University returned to Qingdao in 1946, he came back to restore and establish the Department of zoology. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, he also participated in the preparation of the Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Qingdao). In 1957, he left Qingdao and transferred to Beijing.

Now there are more than 10 pieces of Qing style furniture, such as bed, desk, writing desk, wardrobe, chair, etc., which are well preserved. The patio is 9.3 meters long and 4.8 meters wide. There are pebbles with round patterns in the middle and pebbles with square patterns around. Tianjin is a typical courtyard style residential building in the late Qing Dynasty, which is well preserved and equipped with a strip stone about 3 meters long. Since its inception, the house has not been reconstructed or repaired on a large scale, and its overall structure is still full of antique flavor.
However, due to years of natural wind and rain erosion, and the descendants of Tong family living in the former residence are old and weak, unable to repair, some of the structure or components of the house are incomplete, rotten, broken, inclined and so on.
History of former residence
Probably because of his major, Tong Dizhou had a lot to do with Qingdao. In 1934, Tong Dizhou returned from studying in Europe and came to Qingdao to serve as a professor of Biology Department of Shandong University. After Shandong University resumed in Qingdao in 1946, he returned to Shandong University to establish the Department of zoology and served as the director of the Department. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, Tong Dizhou presided over the establishment of Qingdao Marine Biology Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and since then devoted himself to the research of fish cytogenetics.
Tong Dizhou's marine biology laboratory is located at 28 Laiyang Road, not far from the dormitory on Yushan road. However, he and his wife Ye Yufen (a famous biologist) are often busy in the laboratory until early in the morning, and they don't even have time to go home to have a rest. It was also in Qingdao that Tong Dizhou successfully cloned fish, which reached the highest level of biological embryo research in the world at that time.

Tong Dizhou (1902-1979), an outstanding biologist and educator in China, is the main founder of experimental embryology and an outstanding leader in biological science research. He revealed the polar phenomenon of embryonic development, opened up the research field of developmental biology and molecular genetics, and is worthy of the "cloning pioneer" in China. After the founding of new China, Tong Dizhou successively served as vice president of Shandong University, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference, etc.
