The reservoir was built in March 1956 and completed in July 1956. The reservoir is located in the Longtai River Basin, with a rainfall collection area of 22.45 square kilometers. The dam is 975 meters long and the highest dam is 8.2 meters high. The dam type is homogeneous earth dam. It is a medium-sized water conservancy project mainly for irrigation and comprehensive utilization of flood control and fish culture. The reservoir has an irrigation area of 11000 mu, a fish culture area of 2900 Mu and an annual fishing capacity of 20 tons. It is a reservoir managed by the water conservancy department.

Taiping reservoir belongs to class II reservoir. In the construction of flood regulation system, only the conventional flood control operation scheme is formulated. The reservoir has manual observation items of water level and dam displacement, and the communication warning is only transmitted by telephone and manual means. During the flood season, the reservoir reserves 800 woven bags, 700 wooden poles, 100 kg railway wires, 2 vehicles, 2 ships, 100 cubic meters of earth and stone and other flood control materials.

The Taiping reservoir has reached the check standard of once-in-a-thousand-year flood, protecting the flood control safety of 28000 mu of cultivated land and 10000 people in the downstream of the reservoir.
