Historical evolution
In June 1982, Guangxi Shiwandashan National Nature Reserve was established with the approval of Guangxi regional government. After 21 years of management and protection by the Forestry Department of Fangchenggang, the forest area of the reserve has increased by 2000 hectares.
In 2002, the nature reserve was declared as a national nature reserve. In June 2003, it was promoted to a national nature reserve with the approval of the State Council.

Geological characteristics

There are many rivers and water resources in Shiwandashan nature reserve, mainly including Beilun River, Nasuo River, Fangcheng river, Dasi River and Dazhi River, which originate from the south slope of Shiwandashan and flow into Beibu Gulf. Mingjiang River, Pingfu River and Gongan River originate from the north slope of Shiwandashan and flow into Zuojiang river.

There are 2233 species of vascular plants belonging to 912 genera and 219 families in Shiwandashan National Nature Reserve, including 150 species of pteridophytes belonging to 76 genera and 30 families, 16 species of gymnosperms belonging to 9 genera and 8 families, and 2067 species of angiosperms belonging to 827 genera and 181 families. There are 1713 species of dicotyledons belonging to 154 families, 648 genera and 354 species of monocotyledons belonging to 27 families, 179 genera. There are 4 new records in Chinese mainland, and 10 new records in Guangxi.
Animal resources
In the nature reserve, there are 2 species of national first-class key protected wild plants, and 13 species of national second-class key protected wild plants, such as Cibotium tomentosa and Alsophila spinulosa. There are 5 species of wild animals under the first level national protection: clouded leopard, leopard, forest musk deer, giant lizard and python; and 44 species of wild animals under the second level national protection. There are many kinds of insects and abundant resources in Shiwandashan nature reserve. Up to 2010, 719 species of 169 families in 23 orders have been identified, including 1 new genus, 27 new species, 8 new records in China, 27 endemic insects and 33 rare insects.

There are two kinds of national first-class key protected plants, namely narrow leaf slope base and Shiwandashan Cycas.
1. Narrow leaf horst
Endangered species. Evergreen trees, 25 m high, 75 cm DBH. The resin can be used for spray painting, etc. the wood is hard and corrosion-resistant, and has wide application. Wild plants under the first class national key protection.
2. Shiwandashan Cycas
Cycas balansae is an evergreen palm plant, scientific name: Cycas balansae, Latin scientific name: Cycas balansae. It is distributed under the broad-leaved forest of low-altitude Valley in Fangchenggang City, Guangxi. It is a national first-class protected species, with high research and ornamental value.
3. Golden dog spine
It is the rhizome of hyriophytaceae. The content of starch in rhizome is about 30%. The rhizome contains 48.5% starch and tannins. The rhizome contains starch and gossypol, and the soft hair of rhizome contains tannin and pigment, which has high medicinal value.
