Shanghai Ocean University, formerly known as Shanghai Fisheries University, was renamed in March 2008. The predecessor of the school is Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries school, which was founded in 1912. In 1952, it became the first undergraduate Fisheries University in China - Shanghai Fisheries University. It was renamed Shanghai Fisheries University in 1985 and Shanghai Ocean University in 2008 with the approval of the Ministry of education. The University was originally a university under the Ministry of agriculture, and was transferred to Shanghai by the Ministry of agriculture since 2000. In 2010, the Shanghai Municipal People's government and the State Oceanic Administration signed an agreement to build Shanghai Ocean University; in 2011, the Shanghai Municipal People's government and the Ministry of agriculture jointly issued a document to build Shanghai Ocean University. Shanghai Ocean University is the only agricultural and Forestry University in Shanghai. It is also the university with the most complete aquatic disciplines in China. It is known as "the cradle of modern aquatic education in China".

Historical evolution
In 1904, Zhang Jian, a famous industrialist and educator, advocated that "fishing right is sea power" in order to resist the invasion of fishing and safeguard sea power, and proposed to the Qing government to establish fisheries schools. After Huang Yanpei's help and Zhang Liu's efforts to raise funds, Jiangsu fisheries school was officially established in 1912.
In 1914, the school motto was "diligence, simplicity and faithfulness".
In 1927, the school changed its name to fisheries School of Agricultural College of national fourth Sun Yat sen University.
In 1928, the school changed its name to fisheries School of Agricultural College of National Central University.
In 1929, the school restored the name of Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries school.
In 1937, due to the Anti Japanese war in Songhu on August 13, the school buildings were destroyed in the war, and it was difficult to maintain Fisheries Education in Hechuan, Sichuan. In 1938, the Ministry of Fisheries was first established in the second national middle school, and then the national Sichuan fisheries vocational school was established in 1943.
In 1947, the school resumed in Shanghai and was named Shanghai Wusong Fisheries College.
In 1951, the school changed its name to Shanghai Fisheries College.
In 1952, it was established and upgraded to Shanghai Fisheries University, becoming China's first undergraduate institution of higher fisheries.
In 1972, under the influence of the "Cultural Revolution", the school moved to Jimei, Xiamen, and changed its name to Xiamen Fisheries College. The Department of Fisheries related of Xiamen University was transferred in.
In 1979, with the approval of the State Council, the school moved back to the original site of Shanghai to restore Shanghai Fisheries College, while retaining Xiamen Fisheries College. The two academies have been running their own schools since December 1979.

In 1985, the University changed its name to Shanghai Fisheries University.
In 2000, the school was transferred from the Ministry of agriculture to the local government, jointly built by the central government and the local government, and mainly managed by Shanghai.

In July 2014, it was rated as a national university with typical employment experience by the Ministry of education.
In June 2015, Shanghai Ocean University signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the marine disaster reduction center of the State Oceanic Administration.
In August 2017, it was recognized as one of the first batch of innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration universities in Shanghai. In September, it was shortlisted as one of the first batch of "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities; in the same month, Shanghai Ocean University signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the third Institute of Oceanography of the State Oceanic Administration.
In February 2018, Shanghai Ocean University and the Yangtze River Fisheries Administration Office of the Ministry of agriculture signed the cooperation agreement on Strategic Research of ecological protection in the Yangtze River waters, and the two sides agreed to establish a strategic research center for ecological protection in the Yangtze River waters. In June, the first batch of universities in Shanghai were selected into the leading plan of first-class undergraduate construction. In September, Shanghai Ocean University signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai international port (Group) Co., Ltd. In October, Shanghai Ocean University and Xihu University signed a strategic cooperation agreement.
