Shima River, the middle left bank of the lower reaches of Dongjiang River in the Pearl River system, is located in the east of Dongguan City. It was named Jiujiang River in the Qing Dynasty. It originates from naoke mountain, Longhua Town, Bao'an District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province. It flows northward through Longhua and Guanlan to Tangxia and Zhangmutou in Dongguan City, and Jiantang in Qishi town to Dongjiang River. It is 88 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 1249 square kilometers. In the river near Zhangmutou, there is a big stone in the shape of a horse, so it is named. Guancang water flows eastward between Shixin and Baidi, with a drainage area of 36.3 square kilometers and a river length of 15.7 kilometers.

The end of the Shima River is wide. Whenever a mountain torrent breaks out, it is supported by the Dongjiang River, reaching Hanxi depression on the left bank in the West and Tonghu depression on the right bank in the East. In 1988, hutoudi (the first section of Dongjiang dyke) was built on the left bank to cut off the three branches of shishuikou, Sima and jiujiangshui, so that Shima River flows into Dongjiang River from qishixu through qiaotouxu, shaogangtou and Shangdong.
