Historical review
Huizhong hotel is one of the earliest existing hotels in Shanghai. It can be regarded as a historical building. After the opening of Shanghai port, the Bund was the first area invested and developed by foreign investors. Most of its buildings were first or second floor buildings. In 1854, the central hotel built a three story British style building on the Bund of Nanjing Road, which is the most luxurious hotel in Shanghai. In the same year, the board of directors of Shanghai British concession Industry Bureau held a meeting here. In April 1865, the Bank of Hong Kong set up a Shanghai branch here. In 1903, the property right of Central Hotel was bought by Huizhong foreign company, and then it was reorganized into Huizhong hotel. After the opening of Shanghai, more and more foreigners and missionaries came to Shanghai to do business, so the hotel industry gradually developed. At that time, there were two earliest and most luxurious hotels in Shanghai, one was the Ritz Hotel (today's Pujiang Hotel) and the other was the Central Hotel. In 1906, Huizhong Hotel decided to demolish the old building and rebuild the new one. Huizhong hotel was designed by Scott, an architect of Morrison and built by wangfaji construction factory. It was completed in 1908. The building covers an area of 2125 square meters, with a construction area of 11697 square meters. It is a 6-story building with a height of 30 meters and a brick wood mixed structure. The appearance is Renaissance architectural style. After the completion of the project, the first tram in Shanghai was opened to traffic, and its departure station was set on the Bund of Nanjing Road, with a sea of people along the road. The first floor is a large bar, restaurant and tea room, the second to fifth floors are guest rooms, the sixth floor is staff dormitory, the roof is the earliest roof garden in Shanghai, and there is a baroque Pavilion in the East and West. The architectural style of the building is the British Renaissance architectural style. The exterior wall of the ground floor is faced with granite, and the upper layers are decorated with white tiles. The walls between the floors and the upper two windows are decorated with red fair faced bricks, and some window frames are equipped with arc or triangular lintels. The interior decoration of the hotel is very luxurious. The teak revolving door is used to enter the hotel. There are spacious wooden stairs in the hall, and the handrails are exquisitely carved. In the east of the ground floor is a 300 seat dining hall. The walls are decorated with teak, and the ceiling is decorated with elegant plaster. The side seats can enjoy the street view of Nanjing Road through the doors and windows. In order to facilitate passengers to get up and down, two imported elevators were installed, which are the earliest elevators in Shanghai. On February 1, 1909, the world anti smoking conference was held here, and the representatives of various countries who attended the conference praised the elegance of the building. After the success of the 1911 Revolution, all walks of life in Shanghai gathered at this luxury hotel on December 25 to welcome Dr. Sun Yat Sen back to China and become the president of the Nanjing Provisional Government. Dr. Sun Yat Sen delivered a speech at the meeting. Just when the hotel was very prosperous, in 1914, a fire broke out in the staff dormitory on the sixth floor, and the roof garden and the architectural decoration on the top floor were all burnt down. Soon after the outbreak of the first World War, the owners did not care to repair it, but simply repaired it. The top floor was changed to a flat roof. After the Pacific War in 1914, the Japanese occupied the hotel and resumed business after the victory of the Anti Japanese war. In 1947, the property right of the hotel was sold to Daqing company, a Chinese businessman. It closed in 1952 and was rented by Shanghai Construction and Engineering Bureau. It was rebuilt into the South Building of peace hotel in 1965.
