Mao Dun's former residence is the ancestral residence of revolutionary writer Mao Dun (Shen Yanbing). The former residence, built in the middle of the 19th century, is a folk residence in Jiangnan in the Qing Dynasty. Mao Dun lived here for 13 spring and autumn years from his birth to his study in his hometown.
There are two houses before and after the former residence. The three bungalows in the former one are Mao Dun's bedroom, study and reception room. Mao Dun designed and renovated the study in 1934. There is a small garden beside the house, with bamboo and palm planted by Mao Dun. The latter is a two-story building, which is used as kitchen, dining hall and living room.

Mao Dun's former residence, located at 13 yuanensi Hutong, Jiaodaokou, Dongcheng District, Beijing, covers an area of 878 square meters. Mr. Mao Dun lived here from 1974 to 1981.
The living room and reception room of Mao Dun's former residence are all kept in their original appearance. Mao Dun's books, daily necessities, clothes, stationery and certificates before his death, and the facial models and hand models directly molded by his face after his death are all on display in Mao Dun's former residence.
On May 24, 1984, Mao Dun's former residence was announced as a cultural relic protection unit in Beijing.

Historical evolution
In December 1974, Mao Dun moved to the two entrance standard courtyard of houyuanensi Hutong in Beijing, where he spent six years in his later years.
In 1983, China Maodun Research Association was established, and it once worked in Nanfang, Mao Dun's former residence. Ye Ziming, Zhou Yang, Feng mu, Kong luosun and other literary circles gathered together in nanfangli to recall Mao Dun. The academic research and discussion of China Maodun Research Association is still continuing. However, due to the limited area and outdated equipment, the south room is no longer used as the office and conference room of the Institute.
On March 27, 1985, Mao Dun's former residence was officially opened to the public as an exhibition hall.
In the autumn of 2005, Mao Dun's former residence was closed for renovation, and then reopened on July 3, 2006.
In 2013, the living room of Mao Dun's former residence was affected with damp, and the camphor wooden box and desk drawer for clothes were rusted and could not be opened. Mao Dun's former residence was closed for renovation on September 24, 2014 and reopened on April 1, 2015.
Architectural features
Mao Dun's former residence is a courtyard with two entrances. The street gate of Mao Dun's former residence is called "Ruyi gate". On the east side, there is one inverted seat south room, and on the west side, there are three inverted seat South rooms. The street gate and the inverted seat South rooms on both sides are the roof with tile clear water ridge. At both ends of the clear water ridge are six upward inclined scorpion tails and brick carvings under the scorpion tails.
Entering the street is a screen wall, which is inlaid with a marble plaque with black background and gold lettered "Mao Dun's former residence" written by Deng Yingchao. In front of the screen wall is a lotus jar. On entering the hospital, there are three rooms in the north, one in the ear on both sides, three in the East and three in the west, and one in the ear on the south. The north room is Mr. Mao Dun's studio and bedroom, the west room is the living room and study, and the east room is the dining room. There are two Taiping flowers in the courtyard. In the courtyard, there is a half length statue of Mao Dun on a black marble base. The material of the statue is white marble with a height of 83 cm.
Cultural relics
The backyard of Mao Dun's former residence is Mao Dun's study and bedroom. The furnishings in the house keep the original appearance of Mao Dun after he left: several pieces of old furniture and a single bed.
Major exhibitions
There is an exhibition of "great revolutionary writer Mao Dun" in Mao Dun's former residence. The exhibition shows Mao Dun's life from his youth to his death, mainly his photos of various periods, and some objects, such as books and stationery.
History and culture
In his former residence, Mao Dun completed his last work, the memoir the road I've walked. At that time, he was in extremely poor health, with severe emphysema and near blindness in one eye. Until his death in 1981, Mao Dun's manuscripts had 400000 words, and his memoirs described the past before 1934. After 1934, Mao Dun's son and daughter-in-law finished the work according to his recorder.

Mao Dun's former residence was closed for renovation in the autumn of 2005, with a total cost of 2 million yuan. This renovation is mainly from two aspects of civil engineering and exhibition renewal. The general principle of renovation is to protect the original appearance of the former residence. The exhibition of Mao Dun's life was redesigned during the renovation, and the furnishings in the study, bedroom and reception hall were arranged strictly according to the original appearance.
Mao Dun's former residence was closed from December 30, 2010 to March 31, 2011, and the interior was renovated.
Mao Dun's former residence was closed for renovation on September 24, 2014. The renovation is mainly to replace the floor, add heating in the bedroom, and repaint.
