Jiujiang Vocational and technical college is a full-time ordinary university approved by the Ministry of education. Its predecessor, Jiujiang shipbuilding industry school, was founded in 1960, and successively subordinate to the former first Ministry of machinery industry, the third Ministry of machinery industry, the Sixth Ministry of machinery industry and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. In 1994, it was approved by the former State Education Commission to hold higher vocational education, which is one of the first 10 schools to hold higher vocational education in China. In 1999, the school was transferred from the Commission of science, technology and industry for national defense to the people's Government of Jiangxi Province. In 2003, it passed the national talent training level evaluation of Higher Vocational Colleges organized by the Ministry of education. In 2004, it was determined as the "basic laboratory college jointly built by the central and local governments" by the Ministry of finance. In 2005, it was awarded the title of "national advanced unit of Vocational education" by seven ministries and commissions of the State Council. In 2007, the University was selected by the Commission of science, technology and industry for national defense as one of the 15 key training bases for national defense science, technology and industry vocational education. It was determined by the Ministry of finance as "the central and local universities jointly build characteristic and advantageous discipline laboratory colleges". In 2010, it won the central financial support for the development of local universities. In June 2010, the "National Demonstrative Higher Vocational College Construction Project" successfully passed the acceptance of the Ministry of education and the Ministry of finance, becoming the only National Demonstrative Higher Vocational College in Jiangxi Province. In May 2011, the University was awarded the title of "National Graduate Employment typical experience university" by the Ministry of education. In 2012, it was identified as the first batch of "education informatization pilot units" by the Ministry of education.

The school covers an area of 1200 mu, with Lianxi and Shili campuses, 7 secondary colleges and 3 teaching departments, and 17400 full-time students. There are 59 majors in the University, including 5 national demonstration majors, 8 national defense and military industry specialty, 7 university characteristic majors in Jiangxi Province, 8 higher vocational college demonstration majors in Jiangxi Province, 3 national machinery industry characteristic majors, and 2 National Machinery Industry Innovation majors.
