The school was founded in 1979, formerly known as Tianjin Institute of technology. In 1996, it merged with the former branch of Tianjin University, electromechanical branch of Tianjin University and metallurgical branch of Tianjin University to form a new Tianjin Institute of technology. Approved by the Ministry of education, it was renamed Tianjin University of technology in 2004.
