The predecessor of Shanxi College of traditional Chinese medicine is the college class of traditional Chinese medicine of Shanxi Medical College founded in 1978. Approved by the former State Education Commission, Shanxi College of traditional Chinese medicine was formally established in 1989. In 2001, it began to recruit master's degree students. It is a pilot project for the reform of the education and training plan of the first batch of outstanding doctors (traditional Chinese Medicine) of the Ministry of education in Shanxi Province Colleges and universities. In April 2016, the Ministry of Education officially approved the preparation of Shanxi University of traditional Chinese medicine.

After more than 30 years of construction and development, the university has become a traditional Chinese medicine college with distinctive characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine and close combination of production, teaching, research and medicine. It is the center of traditional Chinese medicine personnel training, scientific and technological innovation, medical and social services and cultural inheritance in Shanxi Province.

The school has perfect infrastructure and sufficient resources. There are two campuses in Taiyuan and Jinzhong, covering an area of 959.54 Mu and a building area of 368000 m2. Jinzhong campus has unique architectural style, solemn and elegant, beautiful environment, built Fushan sculpture, traditional Chinese medicine culture relief, Shanghu, Shennong Medicine Valley and other cultural landscape, full of rich traditional Chinese medicine cultural elements, is the propaganda and education base of traditional Chinese medicine culture in Shanxi Province. The talent training system of the school is relatively complete, and the quality of running the school has been steadily improved. In 2007, he passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education with good results. In 2014, he passed the professional certification of traditional Chinese medicine by the Ministry of education. It is the key construction unit of traditional Chinese medicine culture in the National Hospital of traditional Chinese medicine. The Third Affiliated Hospital is one of the only two Grade-A acupuncture hospitals in China, with its new nine needle technology well-known at home and abroad.
