Nanjing University of Posts and telecommunications is a university with glorious revolutionary tradition. Its predecessor is the war post cadre training class, which was born in Shandong Anti Japanese base area in 1942. It is one of the early schools of our party and our army to systematically cultivate communication talents, and it is a key construction university in Jiangsu Province. In 1958, with the approval of the State Council, the University was officially transformed into an undergraduate university, and has long been a key university directly under the Ministry of industry and information technology (formerly the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications). Since February 2000, the central government and the local government (now the Ministry of industry and information technology and Jiangsu Province) have been jointly building, with Jiangsu Province as the main management. In April 2005, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications officially changed its name to Nanjing University of Posts and telecommunications.

In 1978, it became one of the first batch of universities to recruit postgraduates after the national reform and opening up. In 1998, it was granted the right to confer a doctorate.
