Inner Mongolia University for nationalities, founded in 1958, was formed by the merger of the former Inner Mongolia Normal University for nationalities, Inner Mongolia Medical College and Zhelimu Animal Husbandry College in 2000. It is a key construction university in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and a University jointly built by the people's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the State Commission for democracy.

The school is located in the east of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Tongliao City, which is known as the "Pearl of Horqin grassland". It has three campuses: Huolinhe, Xilamulun and Binhe Park, covering an area of 2.366 million square meters, 418000 square meters of school buildings, 880 million yuan of fixed assets, 200 million yuan of teaching and scientific research equipment, and 1.584 million volumes of paper books.

The school has 27 teaching units, 7 teaching auxiliary units and 1 affiliated unit, and 72 undergraduate majors, covering 11 disciplines such as economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and art. There is a national talent program with special needs, namely, one doctor's program of Mongolian pharmacy, 11 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, covering 73 second-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, and four professional master's degree authorized programs, with the right of self-evaluation of professors.

There are six editions of the journal published at home and abroad. Among them, Social Sciences (Chinese Edition) is the core journal of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences (Expanded Edition). Research on ethnic higher education is the first professional journal to study ethnic higher education in China.

The university is the training unit of Chinese government scholarship for international students in China, and has established friendly cooperative relations with 25 foreign universities, including Buryat Agricultural University of Russia, National Medical University of Mongolia, Jacksonville State University of the United States, Newcastle University of Australia, Shangyue Education University of Japan and Jiangyuan University of Korea. Among them, the cooperation and exchange with the National Medical University of Mongolia has achieved remarkable results. In Mongolia, the Key Laboratory of Mongolian Medicine R & D project, Mongolian medicine pharmaceutical factory and cooperative international Mongolian medical hospital have been built. The university is the training unit of the "international undergraduate academic mutual recognition course (ISEC)" project of the national scholarship Commission of the people's Republic of China, and has set up three "ISEC" project majors. We have carried out a joint training program with Thomas University in the United States.

Since the 12th Five Year Plan, the university has won many honors. In 2011, the Affiliated Hospital of the University was identified as the key hospital of the combination of Mongolian and Western medicine by the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine. In 2012, the University was awarded the honorary title of "national unity and progress model collective", "advanced unit of regional foreign cultural exchange" and "first-class University of reputation of foreign-related universities in the autonomous region".
