Hunan University of Finance and economics is located in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It is a full-time undergraduate college sponsored by the people's Government of Hunan Province, in charge of the Department of education of Hunan Province, and co managed by the Department of finance of Hunan Province.

The predecessor of the college is the "health Accounting Institute" founded in 1933. The founders are Xiong Chongxu, Li Xiaodan, Wang Jifan, Chen jiazan and other famous educators and economists in modern China. In their early years, they studied in Japan, and after returning to China, they devoted themselves to spreading the concept of economic use and the advanced western management methods. Since its establishment, the school has been adhering to the Huxiang school's philosophy of "carrying goods with great virtue, benefiting the people's livelihood", and has become one of the cradles for the dissemination of accounting technology and the cultivation of accounting talents in modern China. In 1942, the Institute was renamed Hunan private tutoring school.

After liberation, the private school was taken over by the people's Government of Hunan Province. In 1951, it was renamed as "Hunan housheng accounting school", which was changed from private to public. Since then, it has been renamed as Hunan finance school, Hunan finance and trade school, Hunan finance and accounting school, Hunan finance and accounting school, etc. It was upgraded to Hunan College of Finance and economics in 1985 and renamed Hunan College of Finance and economics in 1993. In March 2010, approved by the Ministry of education, the University was upgraded to an ordinary undergraduate university.

After many years of construction, the college has developed into a provincial finance and economics undergraduate college with distinctive school running characteristics and constantly enhanced educational competitiveness. The college is adjacent to Changsha West Lake Cultural Park and Meixi Lake under construction. Fenglin 2nd Road, Jinxing Avenue and the newly opened Metro Line 2 provide convenient transportation conditions for the college. The campus is full of trees and flowers. The college now has more than 10000 students, covering an area of more than 760 mu. It has 10 teaching departments, namely, accounting department, finance department, business administration department, information management department, engineering management department, foreign language department, law and public management department, ideological and political theory department, basic course department and physical education department. Among the full-time teachers, 315 have master's degree or above, of which 42 have doctor's degree and 39 are studying for doctor's degree. It has built a campus computer network service system covering the whole campus, which is the first one in the National Education system to pass the "education E-government pilot project" of the Ministry of education It is a pilot unit to collect the funds.
