Sun Yat sen University is located in the forefront of reform and opening up in Guangdong Province. It is located on the Bank of the Pearl River and the South China Sea. There are four campuses, with a total area of 6.17 square kilometers. The South Campus of Guangzhou covers an area of 1.17 square kilometers, the north campus covers an area of 0.39 square kilometers, the East Campus of Guangzhou covers an area of 1.13 square kilometers, and the Zhuhai Campus covers an area of 3.48 square kilometers. Sun Yat sen University is a famous university with a fine tradition of running a school. In 1924, it was founded by Dr. Sun Yat Sen, a great man of the century, and wrote the school motto: "erudition, interrogation, careful thinking, discernment and practice". In 1926, in memory of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, it was renamed National Guangdong University. In the 1930s, Sun Yat sen University set up seven colleges, including arts, science, law, engineering, agriculture, medicine and normal education. In 1935, the University set up a research institute and began to recruit graduate students. In the 1950s, with the adjustment of colleges and departments, Sun Yat sen University became a comprehensive university based on arts and science. Since the founding of the people's Republic of China, Sun Yat sen University has been one of the key universities in China. It is also one of the first batch of doctoral and master's degree awarding units and the first batch of post doctoral research stations. In September 2000, the Zhuhai Campus of Sun Yat sen University was built in Tangjiawan, Zhuhai City, laying a solid foundation for the development of the new century. On October 26, 2001, Sun Yat sen University merged with Sun Yat Sen Medical University to form a new Sun Yat sen University with more complete disciplines and stronger school running power.

Boji Medical College, one of the predecessor of Sun Yat Sen Medical University, was founded in 1866. It is the earliest Western Medical College in China. Dr. Sun Yat Sen studied medicine and engaged in revolutionary activities here. In 1936, Boji medical school developed into the medical school of Lingnan University. In 1953, the Medical College of Sun Yat sen University and the Medical College of Lingnan University merged to establish South China Medical College. In 1954, Guangdong Guanghua Medical College merged. The University was renamed Guangzhou Medical College and Zhongshan Medical College. In 1985, it was renamed Zhongshan Medical University, and gradually developed into a multi College Medical University. It has made remarkable achievements in medical genetics, ophthalmology, oncology, parasitology, internal medicine, Nephrology, organ transplantation, infectious liver disease, biomedical engineering and molecular medicine.

Sun Yat sen University is a comprehensive university covering humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences, engineering, medicine, pharmacy and management sciences.
