East China Normal University

East China Normal University is a comprehensive research-oriented university, which is sponsored by the state, supervised by the Ministry of education, and jointly built by the Ministry of education and the Shanghai Municipal People's government. Founded on October 16, 1951, the university is based on Daxia University (1924) and Guanghua University (1925) and transferred to some departments of Fudan University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University and St. John's University. In 1959, the University was designated as one of the 16 key universities by the CPC Central Committee. In 1972, it was merged with Shanghai Normal University and Shanghai Institute of physical education and renamed Shanghai Normal University. In 1978, the University was once again recognized as a national key university. In 1980, the name of East China Normal University was restored. In 1986, the University was approved by the State Council as one of the 33 institutions of higher learning to establish a graduate school. In 1996, it was listed in the "211 Project" national key construction university. In 1997 and 1998, Shanghai Preschool Teachers College, Shanghai Institute of education and Shanghai Second Institute of education were merged into Shanghai. In 2002, according to the strategic plan of the structural adjustment of the University layout in Shanghai, the planning and construction of Minhang campus was started. In 2006, the main body of the school moved to Minhang campus, forming a school running pattern of "one school, two districts, linkage development". In 2006, the Ministry of education and Shanghai decided to focus on Building East China Normal University, and the university entered the ranks of "985 Project" universities.

The school has 4034 teaching staff, including 2248 full-time teachers. The university has 27 first-class disciplines authorized by doctor's degree, 36 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, 19 kinds of master's degree and education doctor's degree, 25 post doctoral research stations and 83 undergraduate majors. The university has sponsored and undertaken nearly 30 kinds of academic journals. The library has nearly 4.54 million printed documents and 140 electronic document databases (415 sub databases). At present, the school has 22 affiliated primary and secondary schools and 2 kindergartens.

The University attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange. It has established strategic partnership with some world-famous universities, such as French normal university group, New York University, University of Virginia, Cornell University, University of Queensland in Australia, University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, University of Tokyo in Japan, and signed academic cooperation and exchange agreements with more than 200 universities and scientific research institutions in the world. It has established Sino French Joint Research Institute and joint graduate school with French normal university group; Shanghai New York University, which is jointly established with New York University of the United States, is the first Sino US university with independent legal personality; it cooperates with Lyon Business School of France to build Asia Europe Business School; it cooperates with Haifa University of Israel to build joint research institute of translational science and technology. The school has a training base for international Chinese teachers affiliated to the national Hanban, and eight Confucius Institutes are built as Chinese cooperative institutions.
