Taiyuan University of science and technology is the first undergraduate college of heavy machinery in New China. It is a multidisciplinary university with distinctive characteristics and glorious tradition. It is an important talent training and scientific research base in the field of major technical equipment in China.

In 1952, the predecessor of Taiyuan University of science and technology, Shanxi machinery manufacturing industry school, was officially established. Mr. Zhi Bingyuan, an outstanding mechanical engineering expert in modern China and then chief engineer of Taiyuan Heavy Machinery Factory, served as the first president. In 1953, the school was assigned to the first Ministry of machinery industry of the central government. In 1955, the teachers and students of Changchun automobile school and Hankou technology forging and stamping specialty were incorporated into the whole system. In 1960, the school was upgraded and renamed Taiyuan Heavy Machinery College, becoming the first heavy machinery undergraduate college established in New China. In 1965, Dalian Institute of technology, Shenyang Institute of mechanical and electrical lifting conveying machinery professional teachers and students integrated into the system. In 1981, the University began to train postgraduates. In 1983, it became the second batch of universities in China to obtain the right to confer master's degree. In 1998, the school was jointly managed by the Ministry of education and Shanxi Province. In 2004, the University changed its name to Taiyuan University of science and technology. In the same year, Shanxi chemical industry school was merged. In 2005, it became the unit authorized to confer doctoral degree. In 2006, the undergraduate education level was evaluated as excellent by the Ministry of education.

After more than 60 years of unremitting efforts, today's Taiyuan University of science and technology has developed into a teaching and research-oriented university with engineering as the main subject, distinctive characteristics of mainstream disciplines of equipment manufacturing, mutual support of nine disciplines of science, engineering, economics, management, arts, law, philosophy, education and art, and reasonable connection of multi-level education of doctor, master and bachelor.
