Yanbian University

Yanbian University, founded in April 1949, is a local comprehensive university with distinctive national characteristics. Before September 1957, it was under the Ministry of higher education of the State Council, and then under Jilin Province. At the beginning of its establishment, the school had literature department, medical department and agricultural college. Later, after the adjustment of departments, the original department and agricultural college were developed into normal college, medical college and agricultural college. In August 1958, in order to meet the needs of national economic and social development, medical college, agricultural college and engineering college were separated from Yanbian University and became independent Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College and Yanbian Institute of technology. In March 1959, Yanbian Institute of technology was merged into Yanbian University. Yanbian teachers college was established in January 1983. Yanbian branch of Jilin art college was established in June 1988, and was listed as a key comprehensive university of Jilin Province in 1995. In 1996, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, Yanbian University, Yanbian Medical College, Yanbian Agricultural College, Yanbian Teachers College, Yanbian branch of Jilin art college and other five universities in Yanbian were formally merged into the new Yanbian University. In October of the same year, Yanbian University of science and Technology (Preparatory), the first Chinese foreign cooperative school running institution established since China's reform and opening up, was merged. The university has successively passed the preliminary examination and project approval of the "211 Project" department, and has been identified as the national "211 Project" key construction university. In 2001, the school was identified as the key construction college of western development by the Ministry of education. In 2005, it was identified as the joint key support University of Jilin Provincial People's government and the Ministry of education. Since its establishment, the school has always been concerned by the party and the state. Premier Zhou Enlai, chairman Zhu De and acting chairman Dong Biwu, the proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation, visited the school one after another. Chairman Zhu De wrote an inscription: "study Mao Zedong Thought and cultivate socialist successors.". General Secretary Hu Yaobang once wrote an inscription for our school: "strive to cultivate national talents". On January 7, 1991, General Secretary Jiang Zemin personally visited the University and wrote an inscription: "run Yanbian University well and train talents for the construction of the four modernizations.".
