Introduction to history
The Hong Kong University of Education (HKIEd) is one of the eight public universities funded by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Its history can be traced back to the first formal in-service teacher training course in 1853 and the first normal school established by the governor of Hong Kong, sir Hennessy, in 1881. In 1994, the Hong Kong government merged five former teachers' colleges into the Hong Kong Institute of education. In 2016, the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government passed the Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Ordinance 2016 on the third reading, which was gazetted on May 27, 2016, marking the formal birth of the Hong Kong University of Education (HKIEd).
In the 2016 quacquarelli Symonds (QS) world university rankings, our university ranks second in Asia and twelfth in the world in the field of education. The University of education of Hong Kong has been listed as the first batch of key universities in advance by the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China. The University adopts the form of independent enrollment to recruit undergraduates with bachelor's degree in mainland provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government.
Academic structure
Under the vision of "education oriented and beyond education", the university provides a series of professional and multi-disciplinary courses for doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees, including humanities, social sciences and creative arts and culture, to promote the development of teaching and learning.

The graduates of the University have always been favored by employers. Since 2003, the employment or continuing education rate of the graduates has maintained between 95% and 99%. According to the results of the 2014 employment survey, more than 98.6% of the honorary Bachelor of education graduates were employed or chose to continue their studies, with an average starting salary of HK $21598. Graduates of supplementary education courses are also favored by employers. 95% of the graduates were successfully employed or chose to continue their studies. Since 2008, in order to encourage Mainland Graduates to stay in Hong Kong, all mainland undergraduates can apply to the immigration department for extension of stay after graduation. Upon completion of the five-year Bachelor of education programme, students may apply to the Education Bureau of the HKSAR government to become registered teachers to teach in kindergartens, primary schools or secondary schools in Hong Kong.
