China University of Geosciences is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education, a university approved by the state to set up a graduate school, and a university constructed by the national "211 Project" and the Ministry of education's "innovation platform for advantageous disciplines". China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) is located on the Bank of Wuhan East Lake and at the foot of the south mountain. Historical evolution
China University of Geosciences was founded in 1952. Its predecessor is Beijing University of Geosciences, which is a combination of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Tangshan railway University and China University of mining. The University was designated as a national key university in 1960. In 1970, it moved to Jiangling, Hubei Province and renamed Hubei Institute of geology. In 1975, it moved to Wuhan and renamed Wuhan Institute of geology. In 1978, Wuhan Institute of Geosciences established the Beijing Graduate Department of Wuhan Institute of Geosciences at the original site of Beijing; in 1987, the State Education Commission approved the renaming of Wuhan Institute of Geosciences as China University of Geosciences, with the headquarters in Wuhan and Beijing. In February 2000, the school was put under the management of the Ministry of education by the Ministry of land and resources. In October 2006, the Ministry of education and the Ministry of land and resources signed an agreement to jointly build China University of Geosciences.

The school has 3195 staff, including 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 183 doctoral supervisors, 420 professors, 497 associate professors, 5 foreign academicians of the Russian Academy of natural sciences and 5 foreign academicians of the Russian Academy of engineering. Ten of them were selected from the national "Thousand Talents Program" (including 3 youth program), nine were specially invited professors from the "Yangtze River scholars Award Program", four were lecture professors from the "Yangtze River scholars Award Program", ten were awarded by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, two were awarded by the science fund for outstanding young scholars, 31 were awarded by the "new century talents" of the Ministry of education, and 33 were selected by the "Chutian Scholars Program". In recent years, the university has added 2 national innovation research groups, 3 innovation teams of the Ministry of education, 4 national teaching teams, 1 national famous teacher and 8 Hubei famous teachers. In 2008, Professor Cheng Qiuming, after academician Zhao Pengda of our university, became the second Asian to win the international society of mathematical geology's highest award, the klenbein award.
At present, the university has 86 scientific research institutions, laboratories and research institutes (institutes and centers), including 2 state key laboratories, 1 National Engineering Technology Research Center, 1 national local joint engineering laboratory, 14 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, engineering centers and Humanities and social sciences research bases. Academician Yin Hongfu presided over and completed the scientific and technological achievements in determining the "golden nail" (International Standard) of the global Permian Triassic boundary layer type, and won the honors of "top ten progress of basic research in China in 2001", "top ten progress of science and technology in Chinese colleges and universities in 2001" and "top ten science and technology news in China in 2001".
