The Hong Kong University of science and Technology (HKUST) is a highly international research university with four faculties: Science, engineering, business, humanities and social sciences. Among them, the schools of science, technology and business offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses; the school of Humanities and Social Sciences only offers postgraduate courses, but also provides general education for undergraduates. The school is located in clear water bay, close to the mountain and the sea. There are about 8500 students in the University, and graduate students account for about one third of the total number of students. HKUST has an excellent teaching and research team with international reputation. There are about 450 professors, associate professors and assistant professors from 35 countries in the world. All the professors at all levels have Ph.D. degrees, and 75% of them have Ph.D. degrees from 62 first-class research universities in North America. As a highly international research university, all courses of HKUST are taught in English (except some courses about China in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences). In order to broaden students' international horizons, HKUST is committed to implementing the overseas exchange program to provide students with full opportunities to study as exchange students in about 100 famous universities around the world. About 400 undergraduate exchange students are sent each year. Since its founding in 1991, HKUST has rapidly become an internationally renowned university. In November 2004, the times higher education supplement published the ranking of the world's top 50 universities, and the Hong Kong University of science and technology ranked 42, the youngest of the top 50 universities. Professor Ye Yuru, director of the Department of Biochemistry, was awarded the "L'Oreal. UNESCO World Outstanding Female Scientist Achievement Award" in 2004. Professor Huang Jinsong of the Department of mathematics, Professor Ye Yuru of the Department of Biochemistry, Associate Professor Tang zikang of the Department of physics and Professor Wang Kelun of the Department of physics were awarded the second prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2002 and 2003 respectively, which is the highest award in the field of Natural Science in China. The number of research works published by the Department of electrical and electronic engineering in the transactions on electron device Academic Journal of the International Institute of electrical and electronic engineering continues to rise, ranking first in the world from 1998 to 2000. The average number of research papers published by the Department of mechanical engineering from 2000 to 2003 ranked among the top three in the world, similar to Stanford University and California Institute of technology. The number of research papers published by the Department of industrial engineering and engineering management in authoritative journals from 2003 to 2004 ranked the top four in the world, similar to Columbia University and University of California at Berkeley. The average number of research papers published in SCI by the Department of chemical engineering from 2000 to 2003 is between California Institute of technology and Massachusetts Institute of technology, ranking fourth in the world. The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), jointly organized by business school and Kellogg School of management of Northwestern University, ranked sixth in the world in the 2004 financial times rankings. The MBA programs offered by the business school and the executive programs specially designed for enterprises rank first in the Asia Pacific Financial Times. Business school is the first business school in Asia to obtain the dual certification of two international top recognized institutions, namely "International Association of American business schools" and "European management education quality improvement system". With a broad international network, the university has established close ties with top universities in other countries in the Asia Pacific region. It is the only member of the association of East Asian Research Universities and the association of Pacific universities in the HKSAR. Member universities in other regions include Tsinghua University, Peking University, University of Taiwan, University of Tokyo, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, University of British Columbia, Canada and Australian National University. With outstanding scientific research, HKUST is leading the world in many teaching and research fields. Outstanding achievements include: the scientists of the College of science have successfully developed molecular biosensors and used them to monitor the process of cell death; they have developed a brand-new electrorheological fluid, which can be used to manufacture clutches and replace gear rotating devices, bringing significant technological progress to mechanical industries such as automobiles. The important scientific research achievements of the Institute of technology include the development of fast search motion picture technology, which has been internationally recognized as the fourth series of international multimedia application standards (MPEG-4) of the "motion picture experts organization"; the support and recognition of the Chinese government, and the construction of the first key laboratory of the Ministry of education in Hong Kong with Microsoft Asia Research Institute - "Key Laboratory of information technology of the Ministry of Education - Microsoft" Room. The total number of accounting research papers of business school ranks the first in the world, and economic and financial research ranks the first in Asia Pacific. The total number of papers published by the school of Humanities and Social Sciences in the three most authoritative academic journals of Chinese research ranked the top five in the world, along with Harvard University and Stanford University. With advanced facilities, HKUST has a number of unique large-scale scientific research facilities in Asia, including: the first super large geotechnical centrifuge laboratory and the first wind tunnel facility "CLP wind tunnel laboratory" of Asia Pacific universities; the unique ocean color satellite receiving station in Hong Kong; material testing laboratory and microelectronics manufacturing laboratory, etc. The mainland development University of science and technology is recognized as one of the best universities in China and has established close cooperation with academic institutions in the mainland. We have signed university level agreements with several leading universities in the mainland: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, China University of science and technology, Harbin Institute of technology, Xi'an Jiaotong University and Sun Yat sen University. We have implemented the exchange program and selected mainland Postgraduates to Hong Kong. A number of research projects have been funded by the national "863" and "973" programs, with a total amount of more than 100 million yuan. Two of the "973" projects, "applied theory and high performance software in information technology", and "Research on large scale scientific computing", are co-ordinated by professors of HKUST. More than 15 projects have been funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including micro system, wireless communication and environmental protection research. To develop Nansha Information Technology Park in cooperation with Guangzhou municipal government and Fok Ying Tung foundation. Jointly with Shenzhen municipal government and Peking University to establish "Shenzhen Hong Kong industry university research base" and "medical center" in Shenzhen. The way out for graduation: the undergraduate students recruited by HKUST in the mainland have outstanding performance and excellent results. After graduation, students have a wide range of opportunities, including: further study in famous universities in North America, such as Columbia University, Cornell University, University of Illinois, Northwest University, University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University , University of California, Berkeley, Yale University, etc.; continue to study postgraduate courses in HKUST; work in Hong Kong commercial institutions (such as Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Ernst & amp; young, KPMG, Deloitte, HSBC, etc.); a few choose to work in the mainland.
