Beijing Foreign Studies University is located in the North Road of West Third Ring Road, Haidian District, Beijing. It has two campuses on both sides of the Third Ring Road, East and West. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education, "985" advantage discipline innovation platform and the first batch of national "211 Project" construction. At present, it is a Foreign Studies University with a long history, the largest number of teaching languages and complete school running levels.
The predecessor of Beijing Foreign Studies University was the Russian language brigade of the third branch of China Anti Japanese military and Political University, which was founded in Yan'an in 1941. Later, it developed into Yan'an foreign languages school, which was under the leadership of the Party Central Committee. After the founding of new China, the school was under the leadership of the Ministry of foreign affairs. In 1954, it was renamed Beijing Institute of foreign languages. In 1959, it merged with Beijing Institute of Russian to form a new Beijing Institute of foreign languages. After 1980, it was directly under the leadership of the Ministry of education. In 1994, it was officially renamed Beijing Foreign Studies University.
At present, the university has English College, Russian college, advanced translation college, international business college, Chinese language and Literature College, International Relations College, law college, Asian African College, European language and culture college, Marxism college, English for special purposes college, network and continuing education college, Art Research Institute, International Journalism and communication college, German department, French department, Japanese department, Ala In addition, there are teaching and scientific research institutions, such as Burberry language family, Spanish Portuguese language family, computer department, sports teaching and research department, China Overseas Sinology Research Center, Beijing Japanese Studies Research Center, foreign language research institute, foreign literature research institute, International Issues Research Institute, and other auxiliary teaching units, such as information technology center and library. The school has the key research bases of Humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education: China Foreign Language Education Research Center; Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Key Research Base: Beijing Foreign Cultural Exchange and world culture research base; the regional and national research and cultivation bases of the Ministry of Education: Central and Eastern Europe research center, Japan Research Center, English Research Center, Canada Research Center; and the non universal research center of the Ministry of education Language undergraduate talent training base: European language group and Asian African language group. The school has edited and published four national core journals, namely foreign language teaching and research, foreign literature, international forum and Chinese Russian teaching, as well as English learning, Russian learning, German humanities research, French learning and International Sinology. The university has the largest foreign language books, audio-visual and electronic products publishing base in China: foreign language teaching and Research Press.
At present, the school has basically formed a professional pattern with foreign language and literature as the main subject and the coordinated development of literature, law, economics and management. Among them, foreign language and literature is a characteristic subject with traditional advantages in Beijing Foreign Studies University. At present, the school offers English, Russian, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Arabic, Italian, Swedish, Portuguese, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Lao, Myanmar, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, Sinhalese, Turkish, Korean, Swahili, Hausa, polish, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian Romanian, Bulgarian, Serb, Croatian, Albanian, Finnish, Ukrainian, Dutch, Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Hebrew, Norwegian, Icelandic, Danish, Greek, Filipino, Slovenian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Irish, Maltese There are 61 kinds of foreign language courses, including English, Bengali, Kazakh, Uzbek, Zulu, Latin, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Amharic, Sanskrit, Pali, Somali and Nepalese.
The university has 73 undergraduate majors, covering five disciplines of literature, law, economics, management and engineering. It has one first-class discipline doctoral degree awarding authority (foreign language and Literature), 13 second-class discipline doctoral degree awarding authorities, 6 first-class discipline master's degree awarding authorities, 32 second-class discipline master's degree awarding authorities, 4 professional degree awarding authorities and 1 foreign language and literature postdoctoral authority Mobile station. Four national key disciplines (including cultivation disciplines), namely English language and literature, German language and literature, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, Japanese language and literature. Seven key disciplines in Beijing, namely Russian language and literature, Arabic language and literature, Japanese language and literature, comparative literature and cross-cultural studies, Spanish language and literature, European language and literature, French language and literature.
At present, the school has 1303 teaching staff and 142 foreign teachers from 46 countries and regions. There are 4814 undergraduate students, 2232 graduate students (including 392 doctoral students and 1840 master students), and 1324 foreign students.
The university has established cooperation and exchange relations with 451 universities and academic institutions in 87 countries and regions in the world, including Yale University in the United States, Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, St. Petersburg University in Russia, Gottingen University in Germany, Rome University in Italy, Waseda University in Japan and other famous foreign institutions. The school has undertaken 21 overseas Confucius Institutes, located in 17 countries in Asia, Europe and the United States, including the Confucius Institute in Nuremberg, Dusseldorf, Brussels, Liege, Vienna, Rome, Krakow and Roland Confucius Institute, Sofia University, Bulgaria, palaski University, Czech Republic, University of Hawaii, Munich, Malaysia, Korea, Barcelona, Russia, Zayed University, UAE Confucius Institute, University of London, University of Tirana, Albania, University of Gottingen, Germany and University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The school library has a collection of more than 1247000 paper books in Chinese and foreign languages, 482000 e-books in Chinese and foreign languages, 1177 newspapers and periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages, and 52 databases in Chinese and foreign languages, forming a collection feature with language, literature and culture as the main materials. In recent years, with the development of discipline construction in our university, the collection system of legal, diplomatic, economic, news and management literature has gradually formed.
In its 73 year history of running a school, Beijing Foreign Studies University has closely combined with the needs of national development, formed the school running concept of "foreign, special and refined" and the school motto spirit of "inclusive, erudite and practical". It has become an important base for cultivating high-quality foreign-related talents in diplomacy, translation, economy and trade, journalism, law, finance, etc., and has trained more than 90000 high-quality foreign-related talents for the country. Just take the Ministry of foreign affairs as an example. According to incomplete statistics, among the alumni graduated from Beijing Foreign Studies University, more than 400 have successively served as ambassadors and more than 1000 have served as counsellors. Therefore, Beijing Foreign Studies University has won the reputation of "cradle of diplomats of the Republic".
