Chongqing Medical University was founded in 1956. It was established by Shanghai First Medical College (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) and was renamed Chongqing Medical University in 1985. The university is one of the first batch of units authorized by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to confer doctor's and master's degrees.

The school is composed of Yuanjiagang campus in Yuzhong District and Jinyun campus in Chongqing University Town, with a total area of 2650 mu. Among them, Jinyun campus covers an area of more than 2100 mu, with beautiful campus environment and picturesque scenery.

The university has the qualifications to recruit postdoctoral researchers, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students and foreign students.
