Lanzhou University of Arts and Sciences is a provincial full-time undergraduate college. Its predecessor, Gansu Institute of education and Gansu Union University, were founded in 1950 and 1985 respectively. In July 2001, the two universities merged to form a new Gansu Union University. In April 2013, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Lanzhou University of Arts and Sciences was established on the basis of Gansu United University. In 2015, it was identified as a pilot University for transformation and development by Gansu Provincial Department of education. The school has established the school running orientation of "serving the local economic and social development, cultivating applied talents for the tertiary industry, especially the modern service industry and cultural industry". The school is located on the Bank of Yantan Yellow River in Lanzhou, Gansu Province. The campus covers an area of more than 1300 mu, with a building area of 330000 square meters. There are more than 10000 full-time students and 800 teaching staff. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 86.1 million yuan, and the library has a collection of more than 1 million books.

At present, the university has 15 teaching institutions, including the College of Arts, the College of Journalism and communication, the College of tourism, the College of economic management, the College of social management (the College of Marxism), the College of digital media, the College of electronic information engineering, the College of Chemical Engineering, the normal college, the College of foreign languages, the College of fine arts, the College of music and dance, the College of social sports, the College of continuing education, and the art secondary school (Gansu art school) Company. The school has five provincial scientific research platforms, including Gansu animation Engineering Technology Research Center, Collaborative Innovation Center for drama talent training and stage repertoire development, Northwest National Culture and Tourism Development Research Center, China Tower culture research and exchange center, and Key Laboratory of new chemical materials. 115 on campus laboratories, 12 experimental teaching centers and 156 off campus practice and training bases have been built. Lanzhou stereoscopic film and television production center is the first film and television production base in Northwest China to convert 2D to 3D, and has successfully hatched the first professional digital film and television production company in Lanzhou.

The school implements the strategy of "strengthening the school with talents", combines external introduction with internal training, and strengthens the teaching staff. The structure of professional title and educational background of the teaching staff is more optimized, the age structure is more reasonable, and the academic structure is more diversified.

The school has fully implemented the teaching quality improvement project, and has built 5 provincial teaching teams, 12 provincial excellent courses, 4 provincial excellent resource sharing courses, 6 provincial "wonderful lesson" and 5 provincial characteristic majors. The environmental art design major has been listed as the key professional construction project of the Ministry of education.
