Xiamen University, or XMU for short, was founded by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee in 1921. It is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in the history of modern education in China, and it is also a high-level university under the key construction of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". In 2017, Xiamen University was selected into the list of class a world-class universities published by the state.

Since its establishment, the University adheres to the motto of "self-improvement, stop at perfection", has accumulated rich experience in running a school and formed distinctive characteristics of running a school. It has become a comprehensive university with complete disciplines, strong faculty, first-class in China and wide influence in the world. So far, the university has trained more than 300000 undergraduates and postgraduates for the country, and more than 60 academicians of the two academies have studied and worked in Xiamen University.

The university has a graduate school, 6 departments, 28 Colleges (including 88 departments) and 14 research institutes, forming a complete discipline system including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and technology sciences, management sciences, art Sciences, Medical Sciences and other disciplines. The school has 2657 full-time teachers, including 1875 professors and associate professors, accounting for 70.6% of the total number of full-time teachers (the same below), and 2154 with doctoral degrees, accounting for 81.1%. He has actively participated in the international promotion of Chinese. He has cooperated with universities in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and other regions to establish 16 Confucius Institutes, and has been approved to build "Confucius Institute Dean's College".
