[plant morphology] Chieh qua
Annual climbing herb, a variety of wax gourd. Stem slightly square, covered with yellowish brown hairs, tendrils branched. Leaf blade broad ovate or reniform ovate, 5-7 angular or lobed, apex pointed, base cordate, margin serrate. Flowers unisexual, monoecious, solitary in purulent leaves; petiole length of male flowers can reach more than 10 cm; calyx tubular, 5-lobed, lobes triangular ovate, serrated; corolla yellow, 5-lobed, almost reaching the base; stamens 3, anthers separated; female petiole short; ovary inferior, long elliptic, ovary in the living state by dirty color, yellow coarse hair, stigma 3-lobed, slightly twisted. The bottle gourd is columnar, much smaller than the wax gourd, 15-25 cm long and 4-10 cm in diameter; it is still covered with coarse hairs and no white wax powder on the surface after aging. Seeds numerous, long ovate. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from June to August.
It is cultivated in Guangdong.
