Deciduous shrubs, up to 4 m high. Leaves opposite, ovate to oblong, 5-12 cm long and 2-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded or broadly cuneate, margin above middle sharply serrated, below dark green, with silky hairs on veins; petiole short, about 8 mm long, glabrous. Cyme terminal, 3-4 cm in diameter, with membranous early falling linear bracts; pedicel about 5 cm long, hairy. Flowers white; calyx 5-lobed, purple, hairy; corolla 5-lobed; stamens 5-lobed. Berry ovate, beaked, about 7 mm long, smooth, orange red when ripe, with 1 seed inside. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit ripens in October.
It grows on hillsides and valleys. It is distributed in the Yangtze River Basin.
