[plant morphology] Smilax China

Climbing shrubs. Rhizome transverse, irregular bending, thick and hard, sparse fibrous roots. The stem is hard, higher than 0.7-2 m, with sparse spines. Leaves alternate, leathery, round or even broadly elliptic, 5-7 cm long and 2.5-5 cm wide, apex pointed or rounded, base rounded or broadly cuneate, sometimes subcordate, entire, 3-5-veined, green below; petiole 4-5 mm long, with 2 tendrils along both sides of petiole. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; umbels, axillary; bracts ovate lanceolate; perianth lobes 6, 2-whorled, oblong, yellowish green; male flowers about 6 mm in diameter, stamens 6, filaments short, about 4 mm long, anther yellow; female flowers smaller; diameter about 3 mm, staminodes filiform, ovary superior, long ovate, 3-locular, stigma 3-lobed, slightly retroflexed. Berries globose, red. The flowering period is from April to May.

It grows on the edge of hillside and bush. It is distributed in the south of the Yangtze River.

[collection] in February or August, the rhizomes were collected, soil and fibrous roots were removed, and dried in the sun.

[medicinal material] the dry rhizome is slightly cylindrical, slightly curved, nodular and irregularly concave. It is about 8-15 cm in length and 2-4 cm in diameter. The appearance is brownish purple with slight luster. There are hard fibrous root residues and bud marks in the swelling area, or there are hard curved fine roots. It is hard and hard to break, with yellowish brown and flat section. It is thin and long, commonly known as "jingangbian" produced in Jiangsu, and thick and strong, commonly known as "tielingjiao" produced in Zhejiang.

[clinical application] ① treatment of surgical acute infection
