Herbs perennial; stem erect, about 1 m high. Leaves opposite, with short stalks; leaves long ovate or ovate lanceolate, 5-12 cm long, 1.5-4.5 cm wide, apex long pointed, base rounded, margin serrate. Flowers solitary, leaf axils; calyx tube short, apex 6-lobed, lobes linear, dentate, persistent when fruiting; corolla broad campanulate, 5-6-lobed, white or purplish. Berries globose, reddish brown when ripe. The seeds are numerous.
