Deciduous shrubs or small trees, 1-7 m high. Leaves alternate; broadly ovate to broadly obovate, 5-13 cm long and 4-7 cm wide, apex nearly truncate with sharp tip, base rounded or heart-shaped, margin irregularly double serrated, glabrous above, pubescent below veins; petiole 1-2 cm long, densely hairy; stipules small, caducous. The flowers are unisexual, monoecious, and the first leaves are open; the male flowers are in catkins, cylindrical, 5-10 cm long, with 2 accessory bracts per bract, fine hairs on each bract, sharp apex, bright purple brown, stamens 8, medicinal yellow; the female flowers have 2-6 clustered branch ends, which are enclosed in the scale bud when flowering, only the style is exposed, and the style is 2, red. Nutlets subglobose, about 0.7-1.5 cm in diameter, light brown, involucrate or campanulate, formed by (1-2) bracts, margin lobed, lobes almost entire, hairy. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from September to October.

It grows on the shady slope of the mountain and in the jungle. Distributed in Northeast, North China and Shaanxi, Gansu and other places.
