Deciduous shrub, 1-4 m high. Stem erect, slightly arched. The stem branches, leaf axes and petioles are scattered with prickles, the branches are gray white pilose, and glabrous after aging. Leaflets ovate, broadly ovate to long elliptic ovate, 6-12 cm long and 3-6.5 cm wide, terminal leaflets larger, apex acuminate or long pointed, base round or shallow heart-shaped, lateral leaflets often oblique, sparsely white soft hairs above, densely white villi below, margin with irregular coarse teeth, leaflets nearly sessile; stipules linear. Inflorescence short raceme, rachis and pedicel densely short tomentose, calyx 5, petals 5, obovate, with erosive margin, several as long as sepals, red. Aggregate fruit spherical, 1.5 cm in diameter, orange red.
It grows in sparse forest on hillside and forest beside stream. It is distributed in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places.
[indications] for children with wind cold, cough and asthma: take one or two fresh roots of zaogu, add three coins of coriander, perilla and Peucedanum, fry them in water, make brown sugar, and take them before meals in the morning and evening.
