Mandarin Duck

The male is about 43 cm long. Flat mouth, reddish brown. The iris is brown with a yellow white ring around it. The feather color is gorgeous, the forehead and the center of the head are emerald green, with metallic luster; the pillow crown is composed of copper red, purple, green and white feathers; there are pure white eyebrows on both sides of the head; the eyes are light brown, and the cheeks turn brown chestnut; the upper part of the eyes and the ear feather are brown white; the neck collar feather is long and slender, like a spear, showing chestnut color, and the feather axis is light yellow; the chin and throat are almost pure chestnut color. The back and waist are dark brown with copper green metal reflection; there are two white lines on both sides of the shoulders; the innermost two third-order flying feathers are expanded into fan-shaped and erect. The tail is dark brown with metallic green. The upper chest and chest side are purplish brown metallic luster; the lower chest is black on both sides, inlaid with two obvious white transverse bands, and the base of each feather is grayish brown. The lower chest and the lower tail are pure white. The female is small, with grayish brown head, pale brown back, pure white abdomen and no fan-shaped wings. The feet and toes are red and yellow, and the webs are black.

It lives in inland lakes and streams. They usually live in pairs and have strong flying ability. They build nests in tree holes. It propagates in Inner Mongolia and the north of Northeast China, and overwinters from the south of Yangtze River to South China.
