[plant morphology] coconut (Haiyao materia medica), also known as Xu Yu (historical records), Xu ye (Hanshu), Yue Wang TOU (Southern vegetation shape), and coconut chestnut (tree records of Taiwan).

Trees, 20-30 m high, stem erect, unbranched, with whorl like leaf scars. Pinnate compound leaves, usually 20-30 clumps at the top of stem; leaves 3-7 m long, 1-1.4 m wide; leaflets linear, leathery. The flowers are unisexual, monoecious; inflorescences are from axils of leaves, up to 2 meters long; the male flowers are smaller and more, in the upper part of inflorescence, while the female flowers are larger and less, in the lower part of inflorescence, or mixed; the male flowers are symmetrical, perianth 3, stamen 6; the female perianth 6, ovary 3-locular. The drupe is oval or oval in shape and slightly trigonous, 20-35 cm long and 21-24 cm in diameter. It is greenish before heat and dark brown at maturity. The exocarp is thin, the mesocarp is thick fibrous layer, the endocarp is horny and extremely hard, with three basal pores; the seed coat is thin, with white endosperm (i.e. coconut flesh); there is a large cavity in the endosperm to store the slurry. Fruit ripens one year after flowering.

It grows on the sandy land in the tropics or on the banks of rivers and valleys with higher temperature and on the flat land with higher humidity. It is distributed in Taiwan, Guangdong, Hainan, Yunnan (South), etc.

[chemical constituents] the leaves contain crab inositol.

[pharmacological action] the decoction and water extract of leaves and stems (adding alcohol to remove the precipitates) have excitatory effect on isolated ileum of guinea pigs, but have no obvious effect on isolated uterus of rats. Intravenous injection of the decoction can reduce blood pressure in anesthetized dogs. The mice were intraperitoneally injected with 0.1g crude drug, and all the mice died within 24 hours. The toxicity of water extract was low, and the same toxicity was caused by intraperitoneal injection of 1G crude drug per mouse.
