Deciduous shrub, up to 1 m high. The stem is slender and erect, with silky pubescence when young. Leaves usually opposite, occasionally alternate, elliptic to oblong, 3-5.5 cm long and 5-20 cm wide, slightly leathery, all green, apex pointed, sparsely silky villous on both sides when young, densely veined, gradually falling off when old; petioles short, densely pubescent. Flowers: first leaves open, lilac, usually from the top of branches, axils, 3-7 clusters; flowers enzymatic, no petals; calyx cylindrical and thin, about 1 cm long, densely covered with silky pubescence, apex 4-lobed, lobes ovate, less than 1 cm long; stamens 8, 2-whorled, attached to calyx tube, without filaments; pistil 1, ovary superior, 1-locular, style very short or absent, stigma capitate.
