Erect shrub, about 1 m high, with rust colored bristles. The woody root is long conic, less branched, and the skin is dark purple red when dry. Leaves alternate, leathery, 3-compound, terminal leaflets ovoid, 2.5-7 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, apex rounded, slightly concave, base rounded or shallowly cordate; lateral leaflets smaller; petiole 5-20 mm long, sometimes subsessile, hairy. Panicle terminal or axillary; pedicel articulated; calyx campanulate, calyx teeth 5, lanceolate, upper two teeth nearly conjoined; corolla purple, 1 times longer than calyx, keel shorter than flag and nearly equal to wing, upper curved. Pods obliquely ovate, ca. 6 mm long, ca. 4 mm wide, with purple reticulate veins.

It grows on the side of mountain stream, paddy field, grass slope, woodland or hillside shrub. It is distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan and other places.
