[source] it is the root of Hydrangea latifolia or Hydrangea umbellifera.
[plant morphology] 1. Hydrangea lalianensis, also known as leprosy, big leaf tuchangshan and big leaf mouse bamboo.
Shrub, 2-3m high. Branchlets terete, or slightly tetragonal, covered with white hirsute, grayish brown when old. Single leaf opposite, lanceolate, elliptic, lanceolate or ovate, 8-20 cm long, 2-3 cm wide, acuminate, margin serrulate, base cuneate or rounded, upper green, lower gray, both sides with hirsute hairs. Cyme terminal, pedicel densely covered with hirsute; flower heteromorphic; outer margin sterile flower, sepals 4, petal shaped, white or purple, broadly ovoid, apex serrate, about 2-4 cm in diameter; central is pregnant flower, white, calyx tube and ovary connate, sparsely hirsute, calyx split triangular, petals 5, oblong ovate, tweezers arranged, pistil 1, ovary inferior, style 2, Stigma capitate. Capsule hemispherical, top truncated, about 3 mm long, ridged, small seeds, wings at both ends, yellowish brown. The flowering period is August. The fruiting period is September.
It grows on the edge of stream and forest in low mountain area. It is distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Anhui and other places.
② Umbrella Hydrangea, also known as: umbrella flower eight immortals.
Deciduous shrub, 1 m high or higher, with purple young branches, curly hair when young, smooth bark when old, split into thin slices. Leaves simple, opposite, membranous, lanceolate, oblong lanceolate or obovate, apex caudate acuminate. Base cuneate, margin serrate except base, yellow green above, sparsely growing soft hairs along midvein, pink white below, sparsely covered with coarse bristles, dense along vein; petiole covered with curly hairs. Inflorescence umbelliform, flowers dimorphic, numerous; petals obovate oblong, yellow. Capsule round.
It grows on hillside, stream and forest edge. It is distributed in Zhejiang, Weixi, Anhui and other places.

[collection] it can be harvested all year round, especially in winter. After digging out the roots, immerse them in water, wipe off the fine roots and husks, dry them in the sun, or slice them to dry.
[medicinal materials] the dried roots are cylindrical, often divergent, not straight, 5-20 mm in diameter and 10-30 cm in length. The surface is dark yellowish brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and branch root marks; the skin removed is light yellow, with fine longitudinal lines. It is hard and not easy to break; the section is yellowish white. It tastes bitter.

It is not suitable for those with cold stomach.
