Perennial herbs, 15-20 cm high. Tuberous roots long fusiform. The lower part of the stem is purple, nearly square, the upper part is nearly round, green, with 2 rows of fine hairs, and the nodes are slightly expanded. Leaves opposite, slightly endoplasmic, lower leaves spatulate or oblanceolate. The upper leaves are ovate lanceolate to long ovate. There are usually four leaves at the end of the stem, which are arranged in a cross shape, and the edge is slightly wavy. Flowers axillary, type 2: lower part of stem closed, axillary, small, pedicel thin, pilose; sepals 4; apetalous. Common flower 1-3, terminal, white; pedicel 1-4) cm long, purple; sepal 5, lanceolate, abaxially hairy; petal 5, obovate, apically 2-toothed; stamen 10, anther purple; pistil 1, style 3, stigma capitate. Capsule subglobose, 5-valved at maturity. Seeds oblate, verrucous. The flowering period is from April to May. The fruit period is from May to June.
It grows in the deep humus rich soil under the forest. It is distributed in East China, central China, North China, northeast and Northwest China.
