Herbs perennial, up to 1 m tall. Stem tetragonal, with nodes showing bundles, membranous wings at four corners, many branches, glabrous. Leaves opposite; ovate or ovate lanceolate, 1-2.5 cm long, 4-30 mm wide, apex pointed, base broadly cuneate or rounded, lower leaves more than 3-lobed, lateral lobes ovate, middle lobes slightly longer, ovate lanceolate; upper leaves gradually smaller, lateral lobes coarsely dentate; both sides densely hairy; petiole 2-12 mm long, hairy. Flowers solitary, leaf axils, lavender; pedicel about 8 mm long, apex with 2-bract, hairy; calyx campanulate, hairy outside, apex 5-lobed, lobes lanceolate, long pointed; corolla hairy outside, tube slender, apex lip shaped, upper lip 2-lobed, lobes round, lower lip 3-lobed, middle lobe slightly elliptic, lateral lobe smaller; stamens 4, protruding out of corolla, upper pair slightly short, filaments hairy at lower end; Ovary 4-lobed, hairy, style apex 2-lobed. It blooms in early summer.
It grows in the mountain and wet area, and is cultivated occasionally. It is distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangxi, Hunan and other places.

[medicinal material] dried whole grass, 30-40 cm long. The roots are brownish red and short. The stem is tetragonal, with protruding edges, 3-4cm long nodes, obvious scab, withered green or green brown surface, soft and brittle, easy to break, white pith, and loose bubble like Cordyceps. Many leaves fall off. Qi is weak.
