[plant morphology] Myrica rubra
Deciduous shrub, 1-1.5m high. Branches slender, with reddish brown hairs, old branches glabrous. Leaves opposite, papery, ovate lanceolate or ovate elliptic, 2.5-4 cm long, 8-12 mm wide, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate, entire, glabrous above, lateral veins slightly white pilose below, subsessile; stipules small, caducous. Inflorescence simple, axillary or terminal, 0.5-1.5 cm in diameter, peduncle 2-5 cm long, pubescent; calyx tube short, lobes 5; corolla tubular, about 5 mm long, purplish red, lobes 5, outside hairy; stamen 5; ovary inferior, style slender, about 1 times longer than corolla. Capsule long ovate cuneate, ca. 3 mm, locular dehiscent. Seeds numerous, small, oblong, winged at both ends. The flowering period is from June to July. The fruit period is from September to October.
Born in streams, rivers, beaches and other wet places. It is distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi.

[clinical application] treatment of bacillary dysentery and enteritis
According to the observation of 666 cases, the cure rate was 89.2%. Most cases took effect within 3 days, with an average of 6.5 days. It is also effective for patients who are not sensitive to other anti dysentery drugs. The recurrence rate was less than 2.4%. It also has effect on chronic bacillary dysentery, acute and chronic nonspecific enteritis. Usage: Take 1 liang of whole herb, decoct it in water and drink it as tea; or use flower and fruit (both dry and fresh), dry product for 5 yuan, decoct and boil it or soak it in boiling water for 15 minutes and then drink it; or use tablet, 1.5-2.0 g for adults, 3 times a day. For some patients with oral difficulties or chronic diseases, retention enema can be performed with whole herb 2 liang Decoction plus 200 ml warm water, once or twice a day. If it is made into injection, it has the same curative effect. The results showed that the extract of the drug had antibacterial effect on Shigella dysenteriae at 10% concentration.
In addition, oral or external use of Myrica rubra (rinse or made into suppository) also has a good effect on vaginal trichomoniasis.
